Seafood rendezvous: Hong Kong’s Quay Bar and Restaurant draws customers in

Restaurant offers mainly seafood with a few meat choices

Good Eating

Nestled in a row of eateries and bars, The Quay Bar and Restaurant is a neighbourhood gem. We were there on a Monday evening and the place was packed. After sampling the food we understood why. The décor is sleek and simple, warm and inviting, with an open kitchen and wine display at the back of the restaurant. We started with a well-made martini and we ordered a bottle of Hidden ID 2015 Shiraz to go with dinner.

The Quay bar and restaurant’s chilli garlic tiger prawns with chorizo

The restaurant offers mainly seafood with a few meat choices. We had an excellent start with porcini mushroom soup (HK$88) and lobster bisque (HK$108) with home-made bread. I always judge a restaurant by its mushroom soup, and this one was on par with any five-star establishment. We followed that with the chilli garlic tiger prawns with chorizo (HK$88 for six pieces). The prawns and chorizo are set on thick bread which soaks up the ample chilli and garlic sauce. The saltiness of the chorizo with the chili and garlic flavours did not overpower the more subtle taste of the prawns - it was an enjoyable dish. We then went for the live French blue mussels with garlic bread (HK$138). The steamed mussels are done in a white wine sauce and it comes with garlic bread.

The mussels were perfectly cooked. We followed that with the catch of the day, encased in salt and oven-baked. The price is dependent on the size and type of fish. Our sea bass was soft and juicy, perfectly done and we ordered a side of truffle fries (HK$68). We finished dinner with a crème brûlée.
