Hong Kong DJ Miss Yellow

This compilation of dance and electronic music from the region won’t get the purists very excited but it shows a good range of commercial sounds with plenty of local connections

Brought to you by Hong Kong-based talent management company b2, Billboard Presents Electric Asia Volume One is billed as a compilation of “the most exciting EDM / dance music from across Asia”. The first volume in a proposed 10 album series, it’s a collection of 15 tracks by artists from China, Korea, Japan, Thailand and India, and is heavily influenced by our disco-happy city. While its cheesy vibe is hardly likely to elevate the heart rate of any dance purist or banging techno DJ, the compilation wisely focuses on the more commercial appeal of mainstream club music, with the obvious highlight coming from the cake-lobbing Steve Aoki, the good-time party DJ having remixed Dust My Shoulders Off by Chengdu superstar Jane Zhang.Hong Kong newcomers Silverstrike lay down the hook-friendly Drop Me in the Air while also remixing YouTube sensation Jannine Weigel’s sweeping EDM ballad Raindrops.Satellites, by Hong Kong’s top female DJ, Miss Yellow, is the album’s dark and moody highlight.
