Better With Beer festival in Hong Kong: over 150 craft beers on free flow, live music, food, drag bingo and other games at two-day event

  • Hong Kong’s Better With Beer festival this weekend has more than 150 craft brews available on free flow, music from local bands, DJs and food
  • There will also be outdoor games, including giant Jenga, drag bingo, and lip-sync battles, with furniture made from upcycled Levi’s to rest on

The team behind the Clockenflap Music and Arts Festival have teamed up with the Craft Beer Association of Hong Kong to launch Better With Beer, a two-day beer and music festival taking place at the city’s Central Harbourfront on Friday and Saturday this week.

This comes just six months after the Clockenflap festival rocked the same venue, and a few months before the landmark festival returns from December 1 to 3.

Better With Beer will feature more than 150 beers from some 20 breweries and distributors, including Gweilo, Young Master, BrewDog, Carbon Brews and Yardley Brothers.

The best part? Visitors get to sample unlimited free-flow beer and beer-related drinks from these makers; cocktails, wines, spirits and soft drinks will be charged for. And in true Clockenflap fashion, there will be live music, food outlets and outdoor entertainment to keep the buzz going.

Musical acts at the Dai Dadi entertainment tent will include Hong Kong bands The Boogie Playboys, Fountain Collective and Shumking Mansion, alongside DJ acts including Crimes Against Pop, South Canton Soul Train and MouseFX.

Festivalgoers can also bond with fellow beer enthusiasts over an array of outdoor games at The Playground, including giant aeroplane chess, Hong Kong-style hopscotch, a beer crate bridge challenge and giant Jenga.

For something a little more eclectic, the Dai Pai Dong tent will put on drag bingo, with the glamorous Madame Mincemeat, as well as other entertainment, such as lip-sync battles, an air guitar competition, live comedy shows and quizzes.

Food outlets to line your stomach include KIN, Honbo, ENSO, Smoke & Barrel and Aitch’s Biltong.

After eating and drinking to your heart’s content, you can lounge around on furniture made from upcycled material from Levi’s at the beer garden. The classic denim brand is also sponsoring prizes for games and competitions.

“Clockenflap has a strong track record of delivering exceptional festival experiences to Hongkongers. By partnering with them, we can focus on what we do best – pouring the finest beers,” says Jason Lowe, president of the Craft Beer Association of Hong Kong and co-founder of HK Brewcraft and Heroes Beer.

“We hope to share our passion for craft beer and inspire a greater appreciation for it.”

Better With Beer event director Matt Jones says, “The craft beer industry in Hong Kong has matured significantly in the past decade. It’s exciting to help showcase home-grown talent in another form.

“The ability to create a genuine celebration of Hong Kong craft – which doesn’t just stop at beer – motivated us to launch this festival.

“We already have interest from international breweries and hope to introduce an awards element in the future, which would be a great beacon for Hong Kong creativity.”

Tickets for groups of four come with a 15 per cent discount. Night sessions are for those over the age of 18 only.

Last but not least, for non-drinkers, and drinkers who care about staying hydrated, there will be free-of-charge water stations spread across the event venue. The festival also offers low- and non-alcoholic drinks.
