Here are five things to know about Aries Susanti.

She is nicknamed Spider-Woman

This 24-year-old earned the nickname “Spider-Woman” for her speed and agility climbing up walls. After originating with fans back home, the endearment spread throughout the world of competition. The young athlete says she is up to the challenge of the name, and adds the moniker is for all of the women on her team.

She started with trees

Like many children, Aries Susanti’s first athletic challenges were climbing trees and running races. She liked to push herself further, which she still does to this day. It is her love of climbing that made others take notice: her junior high school teacher introduced her to the sport. And from there, Susanti has literally climbed her way to the top, leaving competitors in her wake and gaining fans at every step of her path to victory. She is an inspiration to children back home and around the world, showing them that if you put your heart into what you do, you can reach your goals. Susanti has gone from climbing trees to aspiring for gold, all by the age of 24.

She is eyeing an Olympic medal

As a competitive athlete, Aries has held nothing back. Winning a silver medal in her first Climbing World Cup in Xiamen, China, in 2017, she has set her sights on reaching gold in the 2020 Olympics and is well on her way to achieving her dream. Currently ranked third in the climbing world for her speed, Susanti has brought a fierce speed with her that has only improved with each competition. With three gold medals, a silver medal, two bronze medals and now the title of women’s world record holder in speed climbing, Aries has won the hearts of climbing fans around the world. She is hoping to further this collection of medals when she reaches the Olympics in Tokyo, where the three-part climbing event will make its debut. There is no doubt Susanti will be racing to the top and giving her fans something to cheer about while there.

She is a women’s world record holder

This young climber, who has only been training in the sport since 2007, has made a name for herself on the walls of history. With a 6.995 second climb up a 15-metre wall at a Climbing World Cup competition in Xiamen, she earned a place in the record books as the women’s world record holder for speed climbing. This young star has brought her spirit to the competition and is letting the world see what she can do. Her small stature and agile moves both help her fly up the wall and claim her victory.

She overcomes to achieve

When fans look at Aries Susanti after a big race, they may see their hero or their chance at Indonesia winning gold in the 2020 Olympics. But there is more to this young climber than meets the eye. She has had to make some tough choices to get to where she is now. In her third semester, Susanti left the University of Muhammadiyah, where she had been studying management. This and other sacrifices helped land her at the top of the rankings list, and her success won her a spot in the Forbes Asia 30 under 30 list.

She has also overcome injury along the way. When she broke the world record she did so with an injured hand. The athlete never let her injury slow her down, however, and the results are in the record books.

With her sports career just beginning, Aries Susanti is sure to add to her collection of medals and records along with a multitude of fans. She arrived on the climbing scene to take the top spot, and she is quickly climbing her way there.
