We’re only one-third in, but 2021 has already proved a busy and eventful year for Angelina Jolie. From home-schooling her brood through the pandemic and shopping with firstborn Shiloh, to a nasty divorce battle and a brand new movie, things are going full steam ahead for Angelina and her family, Covid-19 or not. Here are seven things we learned about the Oscar-winning actress so far this year.

Her latest project is an action thriller flick called Those Who Wish Me Dead

Craving another Angelina Jolie blockbuster? Then you’re in for a treat. The 45-year-old movie icon will be the star of upcoming action thriller Those Who Wish Me Dead, in which she plays a firefighter.

Based on Michael Koryta’s novel of the same name, the film is set amid a wildfire in the Montana wilderness. In the film, a teenager witnesses a murder and is chased by two assassins, and it’s Ange’s job to protect him as a forest fire threatens to destroy them all. That’s a whole lot of drama, if you ask us.

Those Who Wish Me Dead premieres on May 14 in cinemas and on HBO Max.

She’s back to acting because of the messy divorce

In recent years, Angelina enjoyed swapping acting for the director’s chair, with films like Unbroken and First They Killed My Father under her belt, but she recently said that she hasn’t been able to take on more directing projects due to her “family situation”, referring to her drawn-out divorce from ex, Brad Pitt.

“I love directing, but I had a change in my family situation that’s not made it possible for me to direct for a few years,” she told Entertainment Weekly in an interview. “I needed to just do shorter jobs and be home more, so I kind of went back to doing a few acting jobs. That’s really the truth of it.”

Yes, the divorce battle still rages on

They split in 2016, but Angelina and Brad’s divorce is yet to be resolved.

That might all change soon, as the former couple are approaching a long-awaited trial that could possibly include testimony from their children as well as testimony regarding allegations of domestic violence.

While there is a separate filing concerning testimony from the former couple’s youngest children, both Brad and Ange need to grant permission from the court to involve minors Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne in their divorce proceedings.

As adults, Maddox – the eldest child at 19 – Zahara and Pax could all testify without any need for parental consent.

According to court records, Angelina has filed various documents making it clear that she is willing to offer “proof and authority in support” of alleged domestic violence during her divorce trial.

Angelina’s dad has a lot to say about it

Angelina Jolie’s father Jon Voight is known for being outspoken, much to his famous daughter’s dismay. And it seems he’s done it again.

The 82-year-old actor recently weighed in on Brad’s past struggles with alcohol during a chat with a paparazzi. He explained how he hopes his former son-in-law “takes care” of himself. “He [Brad] has had some difficulties with alcohol and I hope that he takes care of things and I pray for the guy.”

In his first interview with GQ after his split, Pitt acknowledged alcohol abuse ran him “to the ground”. He vowed to stop drinking, claiming he didn’t “want to live that way any more”.

She sold her Churchill painting, a gift from Brad, for a record-breaking amount

This oil on canvas painting by Sir Winston Churchill was painted in January 1943 and called Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque. Previously owned by Angelina Jolie, it was sold by Christie’s at auction in March 2021 for around US$11.5 million. Photo: AP

Winston Churchill, famously the UK’s wartime prime minister (as seen in Netflix’s The Crown), also dabbled in painting, and his works are now pretty rare and pricey.

In happier times, Brad gifted Angelina with a Churchill painting, titled The Tower of Koutoubia Mosque. Last month, the painting of Marrakech exceeded expectations to sell for US$11.5 million at an auction in London.

We can only imagine what Brad must be thinking.

She added to her impressive Dior collection

Expensive art is not the only thing Angelina collects. It’s no secret she has an impressive collection of luxury bags, too.

Angelina often switches between her white Dior Bobby bag, a black Dior 30 Montaigne, Celine’s Triomphe (in various colours), or the brand’s larger Le 16. In short: she has a penchant for an investment purchase. During a shopping outing in Los Angeles with her daughter Shiloh in January, she debuted the latest addition to her luxury collection: Dior’s new Caro bag.

A tribute to Christian Dior’s sister, Catherine, known affectionately as “Caro”, the bag is clad in the brand’s iconic Cannage motif. And we’re officially very jealous.

The “laid-back BBQ” with Diplo

Rare art and luxury fashion aside, Angelina still likes to keep things “normal” and was snapped at a laid-back BBQ recently.

Superstar DJ Diplo (random!) posted a sneaky picture of Angelina at “a local neighbourhood barbecue” on his Insta stories, seemingly surrounded by drinks and crisps.

Social media gossip suggests Angelina’s son Pax is into DJing, so we wouldn’t be surprised if Diplo was there to offer insight and advice. Whatever the case, the fact that Angelina still attends barbecues is all we need to know.
