Plenty of Western celebrities have shown their love for K-pop, from Cruella’s Emma Stone to F9’s John Cena. Now we have two more names to add to the list: Grimes and Elon Musk.
The hottest news that’s lighting up K-pop headlines recently? Grimes posted photos of herself with Blackpink’s Jennie in front of a SpaceX rocket. Fans might have been excited and confused by the seemingly random encounter, but it’s actually not that surprising: Grimes’ love of K-pop goes way back, with even her boyfriend Musk stanning a certain girl group.

A collaboration with Blackpink?
Grimes and Jennie caused quite the social media stir when their bombshell photo popped up on newsfeeds on July 26. Grimes wrote “Jennie and Grimes go to space” on Twitter, while Jennie captioned her picture on Instagram with “Rocket day with my fairy princess”.
Besides the surprising friendship reveal, their trip to SpaceX – the aerospace company owned by Grimes’ partner Musk – was unexpected too. Fans left plenty of comments on Grimes’ tweet ranging from “Jennie about to film her next MV in space” to “Space Girls”.
Jennie also posted an Instagram story of herself with Grimes, commenting, “We should be in a movie together.” Is this a hint at a future collaboration? Blackpink is working on Blackpink: The Movie as part of its fifth anniversary project “4+1”, after all – maybe Grimes will make a cameo?
According to YG Entertainment, Jennie and Rosé are currently in Los Angeles recording new music. Open any music magazine or have a quick scroll through Instagram, and you’ll find that the pair have been spotted with American stars like Dua Lipa, Jaden Smith and DJ duo Simi & Haze. A Blackpink collaboration with a Western artist seems all too likely … and it might as well be Grimes, if she and Jennie are as tight as they appear to be.
Grimes worked with YYXY on the song Love4eva
And if a Blackpink x Grimes collab did happen, it wouldn’t be the first time that the Canadian artist worked with a K-pop group. In 2018, Loona subunit YYXY featured Grimes on the song Love4eva, where she supplied the vocals for the intro. The song was part of the group’s EP “Beauty & the Beat”. After the collaboration, the band made an enthusiastic post on Twitter, saying, “Grimes, you are Loona’s goddess! It’s an honour to work with you!”
After the song was released, one Twitter user even asked Musk if he would be up for recording some vocals too. He enigmatically replied, “You never know …”
Is Loona’s Go Won the godmother of Grimes and Elon Musk’s son?
But Grimes’ relationships with K-pop stars run even deeper than collaborating on songs and snapping selfies together. She confirmed that Loona member Go Won is apparently the godmother of her son with Musk, X AE A-Xii.
On May 25, 2020, Grimes posted a photo of herself on Instagram and a netizen left the comment, “Is Go Won the godmother of your baby?” Grimes’ response? A simple “yes”.
Although Grimes might have just been joking, her K-pop love still clearly shone through.
The couple have favourite K-pop groups
In Grimes’ interview with Fuse TV in 2015, she revealed some of her favourite K-pop music videos. She recommended Fantastic Baby by BigBang, saying that it’s “really over-the-top in a great way”, and also showed love for I Am the Best by 2NE1, enthusing that “everything that [2NE1 rapper] CL does is really good”. She also called Gee by Girls’ Generation an “all time classic” – and E-Tribe, a recording artist duo who produced the song, actually worked on Love4eva as well. That must have been quite the fangirl moment for Grimes!
And how about Musk? It’s safe to say he’s probably a fan of Loona, if his tweets are anything to go by.
