What were these Korean stars like during military service? Song Joong-ki apparently stole snacks and G-Dragon made army slippers go viral, while Exo’s D.O lived out his passion for cooking
Popular Netflix series D.P. and the hit K-drama Descendants of the Sun might give us a peek into the Korean military, but what is it like in real life? Here’s a closer look at a few interesting incidents that took place when these K-pop and K-drama stars served in the military.
G-Dragon got too many fan letters and made military slippers to go viral
Fan love for G-Dragon didn’t end when he was gone for the military. And as the military allows people to upload letters online, which are then printed out and given to their recipients, fans went all out to show their love for the star.
This is just one example of G-Dragon’s fan power. He even made green military slippers go viral after an image of him in the army was shared online. These were just standard slippers available for everyone serving in the military, according to Koreaboo.
Did Song Joong-ki really steal a snack?
The story caught the attention of Song’s celebrity friends as well. Although the star hasn’t confirmed it himself, It’s Okay, That’s Love star Lee Kwang-soo also shared the Twitter post, commenting, “is it that hard for you?”
D.O served as an army cook
After he was discharged on January 25, 2021, D.O talked about his time in the military the very next day on a VLive video saying, “I’ve heard that cooking duty is harsh, but I loved cooking so much. I wanted to serve as an army cook, so I even got a cooking certification, but it was still hard.” Preparing food for the whole base, he had to cook a huge amount with his team, even using a shovel! His routine? Wake up at 5:20am, cook breakfast, clean up, cook lunch, clean up, cook dinner, clean up and rest at around 7:00pm. Sounds like hard core training for sure.
Jang Hyun-seung’s army transformation
Jang Hyun-seung, a former member of the boy group Beast, was widely known for his moody performances, so when a picture of him smiling happily in the army was shared after his enlistment in July 2018, fans were surprised to see a completely new side of the 32-year-old star, according to Koreaboo.
According to the post shared online, he received a comment from his commander saying he is diligent in everything that he does, that he always greets everyone with a smile and is an example to all.
He was discharged from the military in March 2020, and after his contract with Cube Entertainment expired in August this year, he began focusing on his solo career.
Psy had to serve in the military twice
Besides being famous for his hit song Gangnam Style, Psy is also well-known for having to serve in the military twice. Although he enlisted in 2003 and was discharged in 2005, two years later he was accused of neglecting his duties by going on TV shows and concerts while he was serving in the military, according to Koreaboo.
Eventually, the Seoul Administrative Court reached a ruling that Psy had to enter the military again. The singer then completed his duties in 2009, and received praise for serving not once, but twice. He once shared on the show Come to Play in 2012 that the birthday of his twin daughters is on Armed Forces Day, humorously saying, “I think military is my destiny”.
