There’s no doubt that Jin is a sweet hyung (older brother) in the boy group BTS, as he loves to give memorable gifts to his fellow bandmates on their birthdays. But Jin himself is a deeply admired K-pop megastar with legions of fans who bestow him with outrageous gifts on his big day.

As he turns 29 on December 4, here’s a look back at the most OTT gifts the global superstar has received over the years.

Billboards and ads

While adverts with celebratory messages for K-pop stars on huge screens are no longer a surprising sight, birthday wishes for Jin plastered on a giant billboard in New York’s iconic Times Square in 2020 was certainly a sight to see.

Jin’s fan base managed to book ads in Times Square again this year, according to Bandwagon Asia.

Fans even bought an advertisement in a South Korean newspaper featuring photos of Jin and the message “Happy 29th birthday to my beloved Seokjin”. (Jin’s given name is Kim Seok-jin.)

The trending hashtag #ImTheOneIShouldLove, where participants were encouraged to chime in and talk about themselves, including their hobbies and how they practice self-care, was organised by his dedicated fans for the occasion, too.

Donations

Just as Jin showers his fans and BTS members with love, he also likes to give back by donating huge sums of money on his birthday, in turn inspiring his fans to donate to worthy causes as well under his name.

Korea Animal Rights Advocates (KARA) tweeted that Jin – who loves puppies – made a generous donation to the charity in 2018. The K-pop star sent a whopping 322kg of pet food to KARA, reports Koreaboo. Following in their idol’s footsteps, fans were inspired by the charitable deed and rallied others to follow Jin’s example.

In 2020, Army – BTS’ fans – also donated money and pet food to the Susy Utzinger Organization to help those affected by typhoons Quinta, Rolly and Ulysses, according to Showbiz CheatSheet.

The “BTS Law”

If you’re a fan of BTS – or just K-pop in general – you’re probably already aware of the debate on whether South Korean celebrities should be exempt from mandatory military service. Three days ahead of Jin’s 28th birthday in 2020, he received a “gift” of sorts when South Korea’s National Assembly passed a revision of the Military Service Act, allowing K-pop stars to defer their military service until they turn 30. By providing exemptions for megastars, the idea is that they would improve the country’s cultural status. Fans took note of the unique birthday gift ahead of their idol’s big day, quickly dubbing it the ‘“BTS Law”.

A colourful water show

Jin’s fan base in Peru, MoonProjectPeru, plans to host a fountain performance at Magic Water Circuit, a water park in the Lima district in Peru. The show will take place on December 3 – Jin’s birthday according to local time in the city, reports Star News. The Magic Water Circuit landed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest complex of fountains in the world in a public park, with its 13 water fountains that combine music and colourful lights.

A life-size RJ doll

A life-size two-metre doll is probably the most adorable gift the K-pop star has received to date. During a live broadcast, Jin asked his fans to give him a life-size “two-metre tall RJ” from a BT21, a set of characters co-created by Line Friends and the boy group, report BTS Bomb. After several months since he made the request, Jin shared on his Twitter that he had finally received it in 2020.

Also in 2020, the BTS member released a special solo track titled Abyss for Army on his special day.
