Who is Julian Assange’s new wife, Stella Moris? The South African lawyer counts fashion designer Vivienne Westwood among her supporters and has a degree from Oxford
“I am very happy and very sad,” she told those gathered outside the prison afterwards. “I love Julian with all my heart, and I wish he were here. He’s the most amazing person in the world, and he should be free.”
Assange has been held at Belmarsh since 2019 as the United States continues to seek his extradition to face trial on more than a dozen counts related to WikiLeaks’ release of confidential military records and diplomatic cables. If extradited, he faces a jail sentence of up to 175 years under the Espionage Act.
So just who is the mother of Assange’s children, and how did she meet him?

She’s a South African citizen of Cuban, Spanish and Swedish descent
Moris’ real name is Sara Gonzalez Devant. She was born in Johannesburg in 1983 and lived in several different countries, including Botswana, Lesotho, Sweden and Spain, before moving to the United Kingdom to pursue a career in human rights.
Her father, a Swede of Cuban heritage, was an architect, while her Spanish mother was a theatre director. They were part of the Medu Art Ensemble, a collective of cultural activists, and played a significant role in the struggle against South Africa’s apartheid policy of racial segregation and violent injustice.
According to The Guardian, Devant earned a bachelor’s degree in law and politics at SOAS University of London, a master’s degree in refugee law at Oxford, and a master’s degree in public international law from a University in Madrid.

She changed her identity for Assange and didn’t tell anyone who her children’s father was
Moris first met Assange in 2011 while he was under house arrest at the home of WikiLeaks supporter Captain Vaughan Smith. As an established lawyer and expert in international law, she had been hired as part of Assange’s legal team to help fight his case against extradition to Sweden.
In 2012, Devant officially changed her name to Stella Moris to protect herself and her family. The couple reportedly began their love affair in 2015, got engaged in 2017, and soon after had two sons, Gabriel, four, and Max, two. Both boys are British citizens but at first there was no indication they were Assange’s, as Moris refused to tell even close friends who the father was in a bid to keep them safe.
Their covert relationship was finally made public after Moris attempted to secure bail for the WikiLeaks founder in April 2020.

When asked what made her fall in love with Assange, she told London’s Evening Standard last year, “I find him physically attractive. He’s incredibly intelligent and engaging, he’s curious, he’s caring, his way of thinking is really interesting. He’s also funny – that’s not something many people know about him. But he has a very playful sense of humour.”
She married Assange inside prison – and was immediately asked to leave
For the wedding, Moris wore a floor-length corseted lilac satin gown and Assange a kilt. Both had been designed by Vivienne Westwood, the British fashion designer who fought against Assange’s extradition. Westwood wrote a message just visible on the inside of the dress, and the bride’s long veil was embroidered with graffiti-style words like “valiant”, “relentless” and “free enduring love” as well as messages from family and friends.
“You know what we are going through is cruel and inhuman. The love that we have for each other carries us through this situation and any other that will come,” Moris told supporters after she cut a wedding cake outside the prison gates.

Despite the wedding taking place during regular visiting hours, Moris told the Press Association she was told she had to leave as soon as the ceremony was over.
Prison authorities also denied the couple access to a wedding photographer during the ceremony, saying that photos taken inside the prison were a potential “security risk”. Instead, Moris and her sons and guests posed for photos with flowers and cards from well wishers outside the prison.
Assange continues to fight attempts to remove him from Britain to face trial in the United States.
