Opinion / 4 reasons Britney Spears’ pregnancy news is raising eyebrows, from her relationship with sons Sean and Jayden to her rumoured secret wedding to Sam Asghari

When Britney Spears announced her pregnancy news in an Instagram post on April 12, it took fans aback. The 40-year-old singer and mother-of-two has been making headlines over the past two years over her conservatorship, which came to an end only a few months ago, in November.

Having previously experienced perinatal depression from her previous births, the announcement further sparked controversy and begged the question – is she ready? Though we love you Britney, here are some reasons why it might be all too much, too soon.

1. She’s still finding her feet

It’s no secret that Spears life has been in turmoil for many years, from her public meltdown in 2008 to the subsequent conservatorship that controlled her life for 14 years. Needless to say, Spears has been through a lot, and it will take her time to heal to fully move on with her life. So when she mentioned her desire to marry and have a child with Sam Asghari during her June 2021 court statement, fans were surprised.

“I’m not able to get married or have a baby, I have an IUD inside of myself right now so I don’t get pregnant,” she told the judge. “I wanted to take the IUD out so I could start trying to have another baby. But this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have any more children.”

With the conservatorship finally ending, she’s stuck to her word and has focused on exactly that – another baby. Her body clock is certainly ticking at age 40, so the rush is understandable – but we’d all probably suggest she take some more time to adjust to normal life, if she were our friend.

2. Not much seems to have changed

Let’s be honest, not a lot has changed in the world of Britney Spears since the end of the conservatorship, from what the world can see.

After being controlled and practically living like a prisoner in her own home for so long, fans were hoping to see her life return to normal in some way. If we’re honest, we all wanted to see her back on the red carpet, living her best life in the spotlight, and perhaps even returning to the stage at some point. Instead, her timeline is still littered with strange posts, occasional long rants and dancing videos, still in the same home she was “trapped” in.

Paparazzi pictures have been few and far between, and she hasn’t seemed to have publicly reconnected with many of her former friends. Strangely enough, Donatella Versace of all people showed up in recent pics (taken in the same house, of course). “She’s doing well. I find her in an amazing state of mind,” Versace told Variety afterwards.

3. Her relationship with her boys, Sean and Jayden

Of course, during Spears’ short-lived marriage to Kevin Federline, she had two children, Sean and Jayden. Sean was born on September 14, 2005, while Jayden was born on September 12, 2006 – meaning that they are both now teenagers. From the photos she shares on social media, it appears that she is still on good terms with the boys despite not being able to see them often.

After their divorce in 2007, Spears and her ex-husband agreed to 50-50 joint custody. This changed in September 2019 when Federline was given 70 per cent custody, while Spears was given only 30 per cent.

4. She might’ve married Sam Asghari in secret

After five years of dating, 28-year-old Asghari popped the question to Spears in September 2021 and the two are currently planning their wedding. While no dates have been revealed yet, fitness influencer Asghari told Hollywood Life that he will share moments with fans when the time is right.

Then, in December, when quizzed by TMZ about his holiday plans, he gushed, “baby-making, a lot of baby-making”. And it seems to have worked.

Since then, fans started to speculate that they had a short engagement and a secret private wedding, after Spears kept referring to Asghari as her “husband” in Instagram captions.

Whether they’ve eloped is yet to be confirmed, but one can only hope she has signed a prenup anyway, after years of being taken financially advantage of during her conservatorship.

One thing is for sure – it wouldn’t be her first secret wedding. She got married to Jason Alexander for 55 hours in 2004 on a New Years’ trip to Las Vegas.

“It was just so crazy, man,” Alexander told Access Hollywood. “We were just looking at each other and said, ‘Let’s do something wild, crazy. Let’s go get married, just for the hell of it.’”

That same year, Spears got together with Federline and surprised 30 of their closest friends and family with a secret wedding at their Studio City home – the guests thought they were attending their engagement party.
