Lady Sarah Chatto is one of the more elusive British royals. Her public appearances are usually reserved only for the biggest of occasions, though they tend to happen without fanfare.

Earlier this month, she was seen at the National Service of Thanksgiving in London at the St Paul’s Cathedral, where she was seated next to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. She then graced the traditional events on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot on June 16, her attendance a welcome presence for the royal clan and fans alike.

But who is Lady Sarah Chatto and why is she beloved by many? Here’s what we know …

She’s a low-key royal

Born in 1964, Lady Sarah Chatto was the last royal baby to be born at a palace instead of the hospital. She is the queen’s only niece, as the daughter of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, First Earl of Snowdon, making her 28th in line to the throne. Her parents divorced when she was 14.

Not just for royals: now celebrities rock tiaras on the red carpet too

Regardless of her lineage, she remains a member of the royal family who prefers to keep a low profile. She is “very unassuming, shy and almost embarrassed, with no grandeur at all”, an acquaintance once remarked to British media.

She’s a family favourite – especially beloved by the queen

Lady Sarah Chatto and the queen share a special bond, and reports suggest that the two have grown closer following the passing of Princess Margaret in 2002.

The queen “adores” Lady Sarah Chatto and she is “her absolute favourite younger royal”, per an insider according to British media, so much so that she “seeks out her company as often as possible”. When together, “much giggling can be heard”, the reports added, noting how Lady Sarah Chatto and the queen are very much at ease in each other’s company, as they share “a sense of loyalty, fun, duty and the ridiculous”.

Lady Sarah Chatto was also among the inner circle of royal relatives who was present at Prince Philip’s funeral last year – one of only 30 guests invited – showing how she is indeed one of the queen’s most cherished members of the family.

She was also a bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousin Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981.

Happily married, she has raised her own handsome brood

She married British artist and former actor Daniel St George Chatto in a quiet ceremony in London in 1994. The couple first met in 1983 on the set of the film Heat and Dust, where she worked as a wardrobe assistant and Chatto had a minor role in the film. But it wasn’t until 1986 that they were first seen publicly together at art events such as gallery openings.

The marriage has borne two sons (arguably two of the most handsome royals, too) – Samuel, 25, a potter and artist who is into yoga, and Arthur, 23, who is athletic and enjoys mountain climbing, rowing and ice diving. He is currently serving in the Royal Marines.

Always a creative type, Lady Sarah attended Bedales boarding school in Hampshire where she honed her talent for art.

In a 2018 Country Life feature, Lady Sarah Chatto chose the 15th century The Baptism of Christ as her favourite painting. “This painting by Piero della Francesca is in the National Gallery in London and I always go and look at it when I’m there,” she said, adding that each time she stands in deep contemplation of the work, “I discover something new about it.”

Fans adore her chic sense of style

Her recent appearance at the Royal Ascot, to mark Ladies Day, had fans commenting on her chic look. She chose an elegant palette of neutral cream, white, muted pink and salmon for the events. Many noticed her looks’ homage to her mother, Princess Margaret.

On both days, she wore her signature classy ensemble of a button-up cardigan over a shirt, styled with a full skirt and a classic wide-brimmed sun hat, kitten heels and a leather clutch. Her jewellery was timeless yet meaningful – strands of pearls around her neck, a pair of pearl and diamond earrings (inherited from her mother and worn at her own wedding), and a silver triangular brooch. She kept her hair neat and is said to have stepped out sans make-up.
