Inside Shawn Yue’s impressive vintage watch collection: from the Hong Kong actor’s eponymous Rolex Cosmograph Daytona to a Tiffany and Cartier Submariner and an ultra-rare Patek Philippe
Hong Kong superstar Shawn Yue may be known for his impressive acting and singing skills, but he’s also garnered a reputation for having expensive taste when it comes to watches.
Let’s take a look at some of the 41-year-old’s most stylish pieces.
1. Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 116518LN
When Yue married Sarah Wang in 2017, he wore a Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 116518LN, making it even more sought-after with a new name: “Shawn Yue’s watch”, per Min News.
The timepiece has an 18k yellow gold case with a Oysterflex rubber strap, granting it an elegant and sporty look. It has an impressive high-contrast champagne dial and three black sub-dials, matching both the gold case and black Cerachrom bezel. The hands are also polished gold with luminous hour markers. It is water resistant up to 100 metres and its price ranges between US$48,000 and US$171,400 depending on the condition, according to Luxury Watches USA.
2. Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Paul Newman “John Player Special”
And he is evidently willing to splurge a fortune on them too – this same model was sold for more than US$1.5 million at Sotheby’s in 2020.
Produced between the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, this Paul Newman timepiece with three sub-dials is very special, as it is one of only ten produced in 18k yellow gold for both the case and the bracelet. According to Sotheby’s, it is the most sought-after “John Player Special” as it matches the cars’ symbolic black-and-gold colour from John Player Special’s Lotus team, which dominated F1 at that time.
3. Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Paul Newman “RCO” 6263
In 2021, Yue contributed a valuable part of his collection, a rare Daytona Paul Newman “RCO” 6263, to a Christie’s auction to support the Make a Wish Hong Kong Foundation.
The Paul Newman dial has special details such as a “Sigma” feature besides the “T Swiss made T” under the six o’clock hour marker, per Bob’s Watches. Sigma dials appeared on some Rolex models in the 1970s. The word “Oyster” is also below “Cosmograph” instead of between “Rolex” and “Cosmograph”, as on other common models, making its name Rolex Cosmograph Oyster – RCO, according to Christie’s. Only a few were made in black, making it even rarer and more valuable, up to US$1.2 million, estimated by the auction house.
4. Rolex Tiffany Submariner 6538
Produced in the 1950s, the watch features an oversized crown of 8mm without guards, compared to the 37.5mm diameter, granting it another nickname “Big Crown Submariner”. It was also the first Submariner with the chronometer certification on the dial. Additionally, the Oyster case allows it to resist water pressure up to 200 metres. This model was sold for US$567,000 at a Phillips auction in 2018 – so it’s probably safe to assume that the piece with Tiffany & Co. signature on the dial would certainly cost even more due to its rarity.
5. Rolex Cartier Submariner 5513
Yue is clearly taken with brand collaborations. Besides the Rolex Tiffany Submariner, he also owns a rare Rolex Cartier Submariner 5513, which he showed off on episode five of Inside Out.
Introduced in 1962, the 5513 is iconic for the Submariner line, thanks to its popularity and being in production for 27 years, according to Bob’s Watches. Throughout the decades, the 5513 has come in many different versions, many of them being limited edition, such as the last no-date Submariner with an acrylic crystal, the last with a matte dial and a bidirectional bezel, and the only Submariner with all three different styles of dials.
The 40mm case also has a huge range of variations among their dials, hands, bezels and bracelets in Oyster steel, with water resistance of up to 200 metres. Among them, the rarest and most coveted are retailed by Cartier. One of them was sold for US$175,000 at Heritage Auction in 2019.
6. Rolex Sea Dweller Comex 1665
Besides Submariners, Yue is also apparently a fan of Sea Dwellers. He owns a Sea Dweller Comex Ref. 1665, which was introduced in 1977 as part of a the collaboration between Rolex and the French commercial diving company.
In addition to being the first Sea Dweller with “Comex” on the dial, the watch has other unique features of the 1665 – the very first Sea Dweller that Rolex ever produced. Its water resistance goes to 610 metres, more than double that of the Submariner line. It is also the first timepiece with a helium escape valve, allowing gas pressure release without damaging the watch. Only 300 pieces were produced until 1981, making it the most expensive 1665. Chrono estimated its value at almost US$180,000.
7. Patek Philippe Jumbo Nautilus 3700 Oman
Even though Yue is clearly a Rolex lover, he also has a thing for Patek Philippe. The Jumbo Nautilus 3700 Oman that he owns is one of only three in the world. He revealed on Inside Out that he held it for the entire night when he became its owner.
It also features the iconic rounded octagonal Nautilus design and “jumbo” size of 42mm diameter. The case and bracelet are made of 18k gold with a black dial. A white gold version limited to 10 pieces was sold at the Geneva Watch Auction 2016 for over US$712,000, so this rare model has to cost even more.
