It’s no secret that Angelina Jolie and her Oscar-winning father Jon Voight have had a rocky relationship over the years. In fact, according to British media, it’s become so intense that they’ve had virtually no contact in recent years.
Although they were pictured together on numerous occasions in the early 2000s, they’re rarely seen together in public these days.
However, Voight broke the ice last month when he blasted his daughter for comments she made about the Israel-Gaza war. Jolie had accused Israel of “deliberately bombing children, women, families, deprived of food, medicine and humanitarian aid” in violation of international law, to which her father responded in a video posted on Instagram saying, “I am very disappointed that my daughter, like so many, has no understanding of God’s honour, God’s truths.”
Here’s an update on Angelina Jolie’s famous parents – and what her relationship with them has been like:
Who are Angelina Jolie’s parents?
Angelina Jolie, 48, is the daughter of actor Jon Voight (Midnight Cowboy, Mission: Impossible, Anaconda) and the late actress and former model Marcheline Bertrand (Lookin’ to Get Out, The Man Who Loved Women). She was born in Los Angeles and is also the niece of singer-songwriter Chip Taylor, Voight’s brother.
According to Hello!, Angelina and her older brother James Haven moved to New York to be raised by their mother after their father left.
What happened between Angelina Jolie and her dad?
Jolie, 48, and Voight, 84, are known to have had some public feuds over the years. Although they seemed to get along in 2001, after starring in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider together, things appeared to take a turn again in 2002 when Jolie told Vogue, “We don’t really speak that much any more”.
Per British media, their relationship began to sour when Voight was accused of infidelity whilst he was married to Jolie’s mother Marcheline Bertrand.
What happened to Angelina Jolie’s mother?
Jolie has long spoken about her close relationship with her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand. Sadly, she died of breast and ovarian cancer in 2007 aged just 56.
“I have lived over a decade now without a mum,” Jolie wrote in an emotional essay for Time in 2009. “My mother fought the disease for a decade and made it into her 50s. My grandmother died in her 40s. I’m hoping my choices allow me to live a bit longer,” she added, referring to her decision to get a double mastectomy to prevent herself meeting the same fate.
Did her parents ever meet her ex-husband Brad Pitt and their kids?
In her Time essay, Jolie acknowledged that her mother was able to meet some of her children, but lamented that their time together wasn’t always productive, saying: “She met only a few of her grandchildren and was often too sick to play with them. It’s hard now for me to consider anything in this life divinely guided when I think of how much their lives would have benefited from time with her and the protection of her love and grace.” Brad Pitt was reportedly at Bertrand’s bedside when she died.
Her father also spent time with her children and then-husband Brad Pitt during their marriage. In 2017, Voight was seen leaving a sushi restaurant in Beverly Hills with Pitt, Jolie and their kids Pax, Zahara, and twins Vivienne and Knox, as reported by E! News.
