However, as lovey-dovey as a Valentine’s wedding might seem, a recent survey conducted by CouponBirds showed that out of 21 American celebrity couples who got married before 2020, only seven of them are still together. That makes for a divorce rate of 66.7 per cent.

But who’s to say the longevity of a marriage has anything to do with having a legendary wedding day? Keep scrolling to see how these celebrity Valentine’s marriages really panned out …

While Hayek recalls the Paris courthouse wedding as a complete surprise in a 2023 Glamour interview, the pair is still going strong all these years later.

Nineties romcom sweetheart Meg Ryan first met Dennis Quaid when she starred with him in the 1987 sci-fi film Innerspace, but they only started dating on the set of D.O.A. in 1988. The pair got married on V-Day in 1991 and welcomed their son Jack a year later. Ryan adopted her daughter Daisy in 2006.

Ryan and Quaid split at the turn of the century amid mutual cheating accusations that dominated Y2K tabloids. They filed for divorce in 2001.

It’s only fitting that these two cultural icons picked an equally iconic wedding day. Ford and Flockhart first met at the 59th Golden Globe Awards in 2002 – the year they started dating – and finally got married in 2010.

The Indiana Jones star had been married twice before and was the father of four children before his relationship with Flockhart. Ford later joined the Ally McBeal alum in adopting her son, whom she had adopted just a year before they started dating.

Ford and Flockhart’s marriage has lasted 13 years … and counting.

British singer Elton John and German sound engineer Renate Blauel first met in 1983 in London while finishing his Too Low for Zero album, quickly becoming close friends. A year later, they wed in St Mark’s Church in Sydney, Australia.

Their marriage lasted for four years and ended as soon as John came out as gay. “I denied who I really was, which caused my wife sadness, and caused me huge guilt and regret,” John said in an Instagram statement in 2017.

Despite a legal dispute in 2020 over how John’s biopic Rocketman represented their relationship, the pair continues to be on amicable terms, with John now happily married to Canadian-British filmmaker David Furnish.

Married since 2015, the Sherlock actor met the playwright-director on set in 2009’s Burlesque Fairytales. While Cumberbatch and Hunter have kept their relationship away from the public eye for the most part – subtly announcing their engagement in the Births, Deaths and Marriages column of The Times – they were happy to reveal they had a baby on the way the same year they exchanged vows.

The intimate private ceremony took place in a church on the Isle of Wight on Valentine’s Day. Cumberbatch and Hunter are now the parents of three children.

Oscar-nominated actress Sharon Stone and investigative journalist Phil Bronstein called it quits six years after their Valentine’s wedding in 1998, which took place at Stone’s Beverly Villas home.
