Katie Britt, the Republican senator from Alabama, has had an astounding ascent to political fame. In just two decades, she went from beauty queen to lawyer to the first female politician from Alabama to be elected to the US Senate.

But after a controversial response to US President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address that drew criticism from both Democrats and Republicans alike, she also etched her name in the history books after becoming the topic of a Saturday Night Live (SNL) skit starring Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson.
So is she the new Sarah Palin, the former governor of Alaska who was regularly ridiculed on SNL by her doppelgänger Tina Fey, or was this just a horrible misstep? Here is what you need to know.

Katie Britt’s flop response to Joe Biden’s address

Republican leaders chose Britt to respond to Biden’s March State of the Union address, an endorsement by her party that solidified her star status as a MAGA loyalist. But from her choice of setting – a sparse kitchen – to her evident emotional roller coaster and incorrect information, her speech did not sit well.

In particular, she told a story about a young Mexican victim of sex trafficking in order to attack Biden’s border policies. Per The New York Times though, not only were details of the incident wrong, but it also occurred during George W. Bush’s presidential term between 2004 and 2008. It had nothing to do with Biden.

Known for its political skits, SNL did not miss the opportunity to poke fun at Britt. Dressed in a green top and hair styled to match that of Britt’s, Johansson made a cameo performance taking shots at the senator.

“You see, I’m not just a mother. I’m a wife, a mother, and the craziest b**** in the Target parking lot,” Johansson said.

Despite the criticism, Britt has gotten support from Donald Trump, with his campaign sending a fundraising email out for the politician after her speech, per The New York Times.

Kate’s decision to respond to Biden’s address in her kitchen, while wearing a necklace with a cross pendant, has led to the public nosing about her personal life.

Per CBS, she is married to Wesley Britt, a former NFL player who used to play for the New England Patriots. Wesley was her campaign chairman at one point, but is now reportedly a “state lobbyist”. The couple have two children together.

According to The Independent, Kate’s mother Debra is a former pageant queen and her father Julian owned a hardware store. She grew up in a busy household with three sisters.

In 2000, Britt won the Alabama Junior Miss beauty contest, with the crown seen as an opportunity to enter the Miss America pageant. But Britt opted to go to university instead, majoring in political science and government at the University of Alabama.

She later worked for well-known Alabama senator Richard Shelby and, in 2013, left the job to get a law degree, later returning to Shelby’s office to be his chief of staff between 2016 and 2018.

Her political career developed quickly and, in 2022, she was elected to the US Senate with Trump and Shelby endorsing her. On her profile on the government website, Britt writes that she is “committed to fighting tirelessly to preserve the American dream for our children and our children’s children”.

At just 42, her career may take off even further as rumours about her being Trump’s running mate in the November elections grow stronger.
  • Married to ex-NFL player Wesley Britt, with whom she shares 2 children, she once won the Alabama Junior Miss beauty pageant title, but opted for university instead of entering for Miss America
  • Despite drawing even Republican fire for her bizarre response to Biden’s State of the Union address, Britt has a supporter in POTUS hopeful Trump, whose campaign sent out a fundraising email for her
