Thinking about bringing your furry companion on a trip but worry the long haul will be too taxing for them? What if doggy bathroom breaks, controlled air temperatures and even spa treatments would be waiting for you? Good news – many airports now cater to your four-legged friends, and four airports have gone the extra mile to build lounges where almost every creature on Earth can be housed, bathed and pampered.

Next time you’re ready to hit the friendly skies with your pooch in tow, try booking through these four airports.

5 reasons why Emirates’ London flight is the height of luxury

John F. Kennedy International Airport, US

New York’s main international airport has been highly rated by pet-sporting travellers. Its Ark Pet Oasis provides round-the-clock care and includes outdoor relief, feeding, watering, travel crate cleaning (for the occasional accident) and even the option to get your pet bathed if he or she became soiled in transit. The list of services is quite extensive, but to soothe pet owners’ fears, veterinary care and overnight accommodation are available (where they will be watched for 24 hours). Even if your four-legged pal happens to be a horse, ARK Pet Oasis has your mare covered.

If you’re lucky enough to have your pet with you in the cabin, JFK offers seven animal relief areas throughout the terminals to suit even the snootiest snout. Terminal 5 has a 4,000 sq ft, pet-friendly rooftop complete with outdoor garden, seating for humans and a large terrace.

American Airlines has a 1,000 sq ft grassy pet-relief area and service animal area in its departure section. Terminal 4 has a 70 sq ft grassy (this one is artificial) spot for walking pets before take-off. There’s even a place to wash your hands after you dispose of the waste in the convenient bins. And Terminal 8 has a 1,000 sq ft natural grass patch where dogs can romp and relieve themselves.

Leave it to the Japanese to create an outdoor pet relief area with a self-cleaning “pee pole”. The newly-designed outdoor pavilion features showers, toilets and even a drinking area. The set-up is located by the pickup and drop-off area for travellers who want to make sure their pooch gets last-minute relief before boarding a flight. There are also benches for the owners to sit as dogs take a little stroll, and a roof in case the weather becomes uncooperative.

Most pet relocation companies prefer to use KLM and Air France specifically because those two airlines use the 24-hour pet hotel at Amsterdam’s airport. Air-conditioned rooms can be found inside for pets to relax, and outside a grassy area is set up where they can stretch their legs and relieve themselves.

“All animals can eat, drink, exercise and rest to break up a long journey,” Robert van Voorthuysen, International Sales Manager for the Variation Live department at AF-KL told Pet Relocation. “Dogs and cats deserve the comfort and attention we give to our passengers.”

Frankfurt Airport, Germany

Over the past 12 years, Frankfurt Airport’s Frankfurt Animal Lounge has hosted more than one billion domesticated and exotic animals, according to Lufthansa Cargo. Everything from giraffes to the special envoy pandas China’s President Xi Jinping sent to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2017 have enjoyed some quality time here.

Cats are given quiet zones to calm down (and owners can get photos of the animals enjoying their stay sent to them) and even horses can hang out in one of the 42 large animal stalls. The area is equipped with a non-slip asphalt floor (rather than a conventional concrete one) and the animals are separated to avoid contact with one another in case they get cranky en route.

“It's a lounge just like the lounges we have for passengers. You stay here for a few hours and relax and then connect to another flight. Only there are no cushions,” Marco Klapper, project manager for the Animal Lounge, told The Wall Street Journal.
