According to Dyson’s 2022 Global Hair study, 92 per cent of Hong Kong respondents wash their hair at least every two days, higher than the global average of 78 per cent.

No surprise there.

The hot and humid climate in the fragrant harbour, especially during the summer monsoon season, presents some unique challenges for our hair, including increased oil production from the scalp and sweat, causing it to quickly become dirty, flat and limp.

But don’t despair – your next bad hair day can be prevented.

Hair experts emphasise the importance of finding the right balance with a customised routine. Founder of Artify Lab Heibie Mok – the celebrity hairstylist known for her work with Cantopop diva Joey Yung – shares her thoughts on the matter: “Many of my clients told me that although it’s summer, Hong Kong is different from other countries. Their hair gets flat and limp so easily in Hong Kong summer. I think the city’s pollutants also play a crucial role in the problem as they make our hair dirty and heavy.”

Washing everyday vs dry shampoos

Mok advises that washing every day is best for most people during Hong Kong’s summer to maintain cleanliness without over-washing. “More frequent washing does not mean cleaner hair. Balance is the key,” she adds. While there are no 100 per cent organic shampoos, Mok explains that organic options are beneficial as they contain fewer chemicals that can weigh down hair.

Some people turn to dry shampoos to absorb oil and add volume on non-wash days. However, Mok cautions against using them as a replacement for regular shampooing because “it will also leave residue on the hair. You should wash your hair the same day after using it.”
