David Beckham sidekicks: 6 football icons in the Netflix docuseries who’ve been Becks’ besties through the years, from his Manchester United days to meeting Victoria Beckham and World Cup turmoil
Since the release of the docuseries, Beckham has seen his social media following soar by more than half a million as new insights have been revealed about his relationships, both on and off the field. The show also features commentary from teammates over the years, exploring the firm bonds Beckham developed with them.
Here’s an inside look into his friendships with six icons who not only played alongside him, but also defended him as he faced some of the toughest moments in his life.
1. Gary Neville
The deep friendship between Gary Neville, 48, and Beckham, 48, is well-known in football circles. Neville played for Manchester United between 1992 and 2011, while Beckham played for the team between 1992 and 2003. The two have often referred to each other as brothers who came through the ranks together, and they bonded while sharing a room during away games. Their friendship is so strong that Neville stood beside Becks as his best man when he married Victoria, 49, back in 1999.
Now, decades later, the Netflix docuseries has revealed even more insights into the extent of their friendship, with Neville describing key moments in Becks’ career. Commenting on the furious backlash that Beckham experienced in the aftermath of the England vs Argentina World Cup match in 1998, which saw Becks sent off the field, Neville said the British “wanted blood”. He also spoke about how the hate towards Beckham in future games was a “test of character” for the football star. But Becks endured and, during one game, Neville remembers turning to his pal and realising that Beckham had become a leader and was “inspiring”.
2. Phil Neville
Also included in the Netflix series is Phil Neville, Gary’s brother. Phil, 46, was also Becks’ teammate at Man U, with the two maintaining a long-standing friendship later in life. Phil and Becks’ friendship made headlines in June this year when Phil was sacked as the manager of the Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, a club that Beckham co-owns. Per The Guardian, Beckham said Phil made “a real contribution to the culture of our club with his qualities as a leader and knowledge as a coach”. Speaking about their friendship, Beckham said that his loyalty to Phil was always there as a player and he relied on him because Phil knew what was best for the team, reports AP News.
3. Eric Cantona
Cantona, 57, is widely regarded as one of the most iconic Man U players of all time. Beckham hasn’t been shy in speaking about his respect for the Frenchman, sharing that he felt “blessed” to have played alongside the likes of Cantona in his career. It’s no surprise then that the footballer-turned-actor makes an appearance in Beckham, giving his thoughts on the fame machine that surrounded the midfielder.
4. Paul Scholes
Fellow Man U midfielder Paul Scholes, 48, is also considered one of the team’s greats, making 718 appearances for the Red Devils between 1994 and 2013. Scholes was there for David’s rise to stardom and not only witnessed his teammate find his feet on the field, but also fall in love with Victoria.
Much of the Netflix documentary details the relationship between Beckham and team manager Alex Ferguson, 81. The players all commented on how Ferguson did not focus on one person, but rather on the overall good of the team. The players also detailed how David went to extraordinary lengths to see Victoria when they first started dating, driving for hours to see her for a 20-minute visit. Scholes admitted that it caused tension in the team, saying, “We knew David was p***ing the manger off. I think he was probably going down to London at times when he possibly shouldn’t have been. And the manager wouldn’t have liked that.”
5. Roy Keane
Known for his hard tackling and passionate displays on the field, Roy Keane, 52, achieved godlike status during his 12 years playing for Man U. As a teammate to Beckham during one of the club’s most successful periods, Keane witnessed first-hand how Beckham handled his fame and the money that came with it. Poking fun at his pal, Keane commented in the docuseries on how Beckham proudly boasted that he had dropped a wad of cash on a pen. He said that he could understand spending big on clothes and cars, but couldn’t fathom it with a pen.
Keane reiterated the team philosophy that United players considered themselves a family. Opening up about how Beckham was treated in the wake of the 1998 World Cup incident, Keane showed support for his friend, saying, “You go after him, you go after all of us.”
6. Rio Ferdinand
Ferdinand appears to enjoy a jovial relationship with the Beckhams, publicly poking fun at Victoria’s eating habits in an interview on Australian radio show Kyle and Jackie O in March. He said that he has never seen her eat anything over the years – before glibly telling the hosts, “You can’t be asking a player about another soccer player’s wife.”
