For those who have always dreamed of being able to go into space, the news that an orbiting hotel is expected to open in 2027 brings this fantasy a step closer to reality.

The Gateway Foundation, based in California, has recently announced a plan to open the first hotel in space, named Voyager Station.

The Earth-orbiting hotel is set to be built by Orbital Assembly Corporation, which calls itself “the world’s first large-scale space construction company”, beginning in 2026.

The company said that the ring-shaped hotel is expected to accommodate up to 440 people, and will have gravity equivalent to one-sixth of the Earth’s.

According to a Booking.com survey of around 22,000 travellers around the world, 41 per cent expressed excitement about the prospect of space travel.

To mark this exciting milestone in space travel, the global online travel agency has picked five “out-of-this-world” stays that allow travellers to feel a hint of “outer space” without ever leaving the Earth’s surface.

Achieve lift-off at the Treehotel in Sweden, with its seven rooms perched up in the trees, between four and 10 metres from the ground, depending on the room.

All the rooms are different, as their names suggest: The Mirrorcube has mirrored facades, The Bird’s Nest looks like a nest, while The UFO offers the chance to play the extraterrestrial aboard your flying saucer.

Though spacewalks are not on the itinerary, guests can enjoy a range of outdoor activities, with hiking, kayaking, snowmobiling and ice fishing available, depending on the season.

Galaxy Pod Hostel – Reykjavík, Iceland

The Galaxy Pod Hostel, located in Iceland’s capital of Reykjavík, offers a taste of life aboard a spaceship headed out into the universe.

This affordable hostel offers mixed dormitory rooms and futuristically designed sleeping capsules.

The VR arcade offers games, and also Google Earth VR, with which guests can plan future travels in Iceland and beyond.

Barcelo Sants – Barcelona, Spain

Centrally situated above Barcelona’s Sants railway station, the Barcelo Sants is ideal for travellers on and off the rails, with a cosmic theme running throughout the hotel.

During their stay, guests can choose between two restaurants named after two of the most key elements of the universe – Oxygen and Hydrogen – serving everything from a healthy buffet to avant-garde cuisine.

Then after dinner, a stop at the Orbital Bar is recommended for a selection of out-of-this-world cocktails.

Despite its very down-to earth vibe, Fort Davis is recommended for space lovers who want to get a (admittedly distant) view of out among the galaxies.

Located around 1,500 metres above sea level, it is ideal for stargazing due to its remote location and wide skies.

The surrounding landscape of open prairie and jutting rock formations adds a touch of otherworldly ambience day and night.

Known as the astronomy capital of Australia, Coonabarabran in Warrumbungle Shire is home to Siding Spring, the country’s premier optical and infrared observatory.

Nestled among the Warrumbungles – a mountain range – the observatory has several telescopes, including the world-famous 3.9-metre Anglo-Australian Telescope, allowing guests to get a deeper look into space.

The Barkala Farmstay is the ideal remote spot for sitting on the veranda and looking up at a dazzling night sky full of stars thanks to the lack of light pollution.

This accommodation also has for more earthbound attractions including an outdoor pool and barbecue facilities.
