Pro-democracy protesters have staged repeated demonstrations outside the Chinese embassy in Yangon, Myanmar’s commercial capital, demanding that Beijing stop supporting the country’s junta.
Myanmar’s military overthrew the elected government in a coup on February 1 and put de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint under house arrest.
Holding up signs saying “Support Myanmar, Don’t support dictators” and “Stop helping the military”, the protesters accuse Beijing of aiding the coup plotters.
China, which has major strategic and economic interests in the Southeast Asian country, has denied prior knowledge of or involvement in the coup.
However, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Myanmese officials, including Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who seized power in the coup, in January as part of a regional tour.
