Suspected drug dealer shot after police car chase in northern China

Man injured after pursuit in Shenyang on Tuesday night, according to newspaper report

Police have shot a suspected drug dealer after a car chase in northeastern China, according to a newspaper report.

The man was injured in Shenyang in Liaoning province on Tuesday evening, The Beijing News said.

Witnesses were quoted as saying they saw two vans chasing after a black Nissan car at about 9.40pm.

The Nissan tried to smash its way out after it was circled by the two vehicles, hitting another car.

The witnesses reported hearing three gunshots and later saw a man bleeding in the stomach.

The suspect is receiving treatment in hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.

Shenyang police said they were chasing suspected drug dealers and had confiscated several bags of white powder, according to the report.

They said they fired shots after the suspect, who was driving the Nissan, hit one police officer with the car and injured him.

A woman was also arrested.

The Supreme People’s Court published a circular last week emphasising that the death penalty could be applied to punish serious drug crimes in China.

The National Narcotics Control Commission said last month that there had been a steady increase in the number of people using synthetic drugs, such as methamphetamine, on the mainland.
