Suicidal Chinese man dies in nine-storey fall as illegally parked car stops firemen saving him with airbag

Firefighters failed to save a suicidal Chinese man who leapt to his death from a ninth-floor flat because a car parked illegally on the pavement stopped them placing an airbag next to the building, mainland media reports.

The man died at the scene after landing on the pavement, right in the gap created by the car between the building and the airbag in Beijing’s Xicheng District on Wednesday afternoon, the Beijing Times reported on Thursday.

A security guard at the building said a crowd had gathered outside to building to watch as firefighters were inflating the airbag.

“The cushion was already inflated when the leapt from the ninth floor,” he was quoted as saying. “But he missed the airbag and landed on the ground right in front of the car.”

The report did not say whether the owner of the car parked illegally would face punishment.
