Taken as trash: sick elderly woman abandoned by son beside rubbish bin

A sick elderly woman in eastern China has been abandoned beside a rubbish bin by one of her sons.

The woman, about 90 years old, had been supported by her four sons, who took turns every month to care for her, before she fell ill, news portal Yangtse.com reported.

On Sunday, when she was taken to her youngest son’s home in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, after spending time with her third son, the youngest child found her with knee injuries from a fall.

He asked the third son to take their mother to the hospital but his request was refused.

The youngest son then deserted his mother by a rubbish bin.

A resident living nearby found the woman lying on the ground next to the rubbish bin and called the police, who then took her to her eldest son’s home.

However, the eldest son told reporters that he was already 69 years old and unable to care for his mother.

He hoped that his three brothers would work together to look after their elderly parent, he said.

The woman told reporters that she did not require any medical treatment.

Police officers and the local village committee later helped to settle her down properly, although the report did not say where she was now staying.

Police and the village committee have instructed the woman’s four sons to fulfil their role of taking care of their mother together.
