Some 100,000 butterflies are on display for free in a shopping mall in eastern China.

The display of the 500 species of butterflies, which opened in Jiangsu province’s Changzhou Shopping Centre on Saturday, was to celebrate Chinese Valentine’s Day, Modern Express reported.

Chinese Valentine’s Day falls on Tuesday this year. The display will go on until Sunday.

The butterflies, contained in a 300 square metre conservatory on the mall’s third floor, received more than 5,000 visitors in the three days after the exhibition opened.

A butterfly museum has also been set up on the fourth floor, showcasing different butterfly specimens.

Changzhou Shopping Centre worked with the Beijing Butterfly Breeding Science Park – Asia’s biggest butterfly breeding park – for the event, according to a manager at the mall.

The Beijing butterfly park was proficient in keeping and transporting butterflies and hence their survival could be guaranteed, the manager said.

The butterflies on display did not include any rare species, he added.
