Chinese police wait for man to wed before arresting him for phone theft
Prospective groom robs phone store after squandering father’s life savings
Police in southwest China waited until a young man wed his fiancée in a ceremony at his home before arresting him for stealing more than 20 mobile phones.
Wang Cheng, from Heishui county, Aba district, had been given 140,000 yuan (US$20,300) by his father to set up his marital home, Newssc.org reported.
Instead, he spent the money in less than a month on travel to Qinghai and Gansu provinces.
Wang was scheduled to marry after Lunar New Year but after he spent his father’s life savings he was desperate to replace the cash, so sought a job in Maerkang county.
He did not get the job so decided to steal from a local phone store. The report said Wang replaced a padlock outside the store before the store owner closed at the end of the business day. Wang then opened the lock after the business was closed and stole more than 20 Samsung and Apple smartphones.
