Factbox: the deadliest accidents in HK in the last 40 years

A boat owned by Hongkong Electric carrying more than a hundred staff workers and families collided with a ferry in waters off Lamma Island at about 8:23 pm on October 1, 2012. More than 100 passengers on the boat fell into the water, and at least 38 have been confirmed dead.

More than 100 passengers on the boat fell into the water, and at least 38 have been confirmed dead. This is Hong Kong's deadliest boat accident in 40 years. 

 

2011:

A fire in Fa Yuen Street in Mongkok on November 30 killed 9 people, injured 34, and left 118 people homeless. It was the deadliest fire in Hong Kong in 15 years. 

 

2008:

Eighteen seamen on board the oil rig supply ship Neftegaz-67 died when it capsized and sank after it collided with the larger dry cargo bulk carrier Yao Hai near the Brothers Islands off Lantau on March 22.

 

2003:

A truck hit a bus and sent it plunging 30 metres from a flyover in Tuen Mun, killed 21 people on July 10. 

 

1997:

- A fire at Top One Karaoke in Tsim Sha Tsui killed 17 people in January 1997. It was later discovered that the fire was the result of a planned firebomb attack. The man responsible for the attack, Choi Kam-fai, was caught in 2009 and later sentenced to two life terms

 

1996:

A blaze swept through the Garley Building in Nathan Road, Jordan on November 20, claiming 41 lives and injuring 81. It was considered the worst building fire in Hong Kong during peacetime.

 

1993:

-Twenty people died and 71 were injured in a stampede in Lan Kwai Fong on New Year's Eve. The victims were mostly teenagers.

 

1992:

- Twenty-six Vietnamese refugees were killed and 126 injured after rioters set a fire following a clash at the Shek Kong Vietnamese refugee detention centre.

 

1972:

- A devastating landslide occured at Po Shan Road, destroying a 12-storey apartment building and killing 67 people on June 18th.

 

1971:

- Hong Kong-Macau ferry Fat Shan sank when Typhoon Rose hit Hong Kong on August 16, killing 88 passengers and crew. It was the fourth deadliest boat accident in Hong Kong's history since the 1900s.

- A fire at the Jumbo floating restaurant before its opening killed 34 workers.
