The Hong Kong Federation of Students avoided a further split in its membership last night after Lingnan University students voted against a call for its union to break away from the city’s oldest student body.

Of 1,067 Lingnan students who cast a ballot, 607 were against the idea for their student union to quit the federation, which played a key role last year’s Occupy protests, while 363 said it should remain part of the body, results released late yesterday showed.

The vote was conducted between Tuesday and yesterday. Some 87 students abstained and 10 votes were considered invalid.

The turnout was about 29 per cent of Lingnan student union’s 3,651 members.

Chau Wai-lok, of a concern group advocating the union’s departure from the federation, confirmed the result.

“We admit defeat and accept the voting results by the members of the Lingnan University student union,” he said on the group’s Facebook page.

The group would not raise any objection during a three-day period from today when students can submit complaints over the voting, he said.
