The Hong Kong Observatory issued a No 3 typhoon warning signal at 4.20pm on Monday as Severe Tropical Storm Nalgae edged closer to the city.

The forecaster said the No 3 signal would remain in force at least until Tuesday noon, and it would closely monitor the storm’s movement and development and assess the need of issuing the No 8 warning signal.

The latest warning issued by the observatory meant classes at kindergartens and schools for children with physical or intellectual disabilities would likely be suspended on Tuesday morning.

Under the combined effect of Nalgae – which killed at least 98 people in the Philippines – and the northeast monsoon, the observatory expected strong winds to prevail generally over the city on Monday night and Tuesday morning, with occasional gale-force gusts on high ground.

Members of the public should stay away from the shoreline and not engage in water sports, it added.

The observatory said it expected Nalgae to edge rather close to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary on Wednesday and Thursday.

“It is expected to weaken gradually,” it said. “However, its distance from the Pearl River Estuary and the degree of weakening remain rather uncertain.”

The outer rain bands associated with Nalgae – Korean for wings – were also expected to bring squally showers to the coast of Guangdong in the midweek.

Sunny periods were expected on Tuesday with temperatures ranging between 22 and 27 degrees Celsius (71 and 80 Fahrenheit). It will be cooler with showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.
