Hong Kong driver arrested after elderly man killed in early morning collision

A 26-year-old motorist was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after an elderly man was struck and killed in Sai Kung early on Friday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the incident on Wai Man Road outside Sai Kung Tang Shiu Kin Sports Ground at 6.22am.

A police spokesman said the 76-year-old victim was taken to Tseung Kwan O Hospital, where he was declared dead soon after 7.30am.

According to police, the driver was unhurt and passed a breathalyser test. He was released on bail pending further investigation.

The car, a Honda, suffered damaged to the bonnet and front windscreen and was taken to a government vehicle plant.

Separately, a 25-year-old man was knocked down by a delivery van when he tried to escape after breaking the window of a minibus in Mong Kok in the early hours of Friday.

The incident occurred in Argyle Street soon after 1.15am, according to police. The man suffered facial injuries and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei for treatment.

Between January and April this year, 37 people died in 36 fatal traffic accidents across the city. In the whole of 2019, 113 people died in 107 road accidents.

Last December, six passengers were killed and 39 injured after a double-decker bus ploughed into a roadside tree in Sheung Shui. The impact ripped away most of the bus’ roof.
