Son of Tommy Wan, former Hong Kong delegate to top China political advisory body, dies after car crash
Wan Wai-yan, 52, is thought to have suffered a heart attack at the wheel. He was pulled from the wreckage by rescuers but later died in hospital
The son of Tommy Wan Tai-min, a former Hong Kong delegate to China’s top political advisory body, died in hospital on Saturday after being seriously injured in a car crash.
Sources said doctors suspected that Wan Wai-yan, 52, had suffered a heart attack before losing control of his black Mercedes-Benz and crashing into a fence along Connaught Road in Central at 5am.
He was rushed to hospital for an emergency operation, but did not survive. He died at around 1pm in Queen Mary Hospital.
Wan’s father is a former delegate to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
The car was travelling towards the Western Harbour Tunnel when it careened out of control near Eastern Street and hit a fence on a road divider.
Wan was seriously hurt and trapped in the mangled vehicle. He was unconscious when rescuers pulled him from the wreckage.
“He’s in a very serious condition,” he told the Post.
The Mercedes was severely damaged and its front right wheel dislodged. A skid mark stretching 50 metres could be seen at the scene.

A police spokesman said an investigation was under way.
Wan Wai-yan was an Inner Mongolia autonomous region delegate to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
He is survived by his son and daughter. His son was with him in hospital at the time of his death.
Wesley Wan said the family had decided that they would not donate his brother’s organs.
Family patriarch Tommy Wan is also the founder of retail business Anglo-American Traders.
