Carrie Lam in funeral home mix-up soon after announcing chief executive run
Former chief secretary meant to attend service for late soprano Barbara Fei but ended up at wrong venue
Soon after announcing her bid for the city’s top job on Monday, Hong Kong’s now former No 2 official Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor tried to attend the funeral of world-renowned soprano Barbara Fei Ming-yi but ended up at the wrong venue.
Lam was seen at the Hong Kong Funeral Home in North Point at about 6.40pm, not long after her much-anticipated press conference at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai at 5pm.
But after a quick check at the site, Lam realised she was not at the correct location.
When journalists asked at the funeral home whether she had gone to the wrong venue, Lam said: “Oh yes, my friend made a mistake. [I’m attending] Fei Ming-Yi’s [funeral].”
The prominent soprano and founder of choral group Allegro Singers died on January 3 at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital at the age of 85. Her funeral service was held at the Universal Funeral Parlour in Hung Hom on Monday night.
When a journalist asked Lam whether she needed a ride to the parlour, she said: “No, thank you.”
With an embarrassed smile, she returned to the car with her assistant and was then driven to the Hung Hom parlour.
After the funeral, Lam headed back to her Barker Road home on The Peak.
