  • Cantonese chat a hit with fans ahead of sci-fi sequel hitting big screen

Famous Hong Kong actress-turned-YouTuber Dodo Cheng has made a splash after being invited to Los Angeles to conduct an exclusive interview with the leading actors and director of the movie Dune: Part Two.

Cheng, 66, whose full name is Cheng Yu-ling, hosts the YouTube channel “The Do Show” that has 282,000 subscribers.

She has made the city proud by becoming one of the few hosts in the world to interview the stars of the sequel to the smash hit science fiction movie, Dune.

A story of family revenge, Dune: Part Two is directed by the French-Canadian film director and writer Denis Villeneuve and casts major-league stars such as Timothée Chalamet, Austin Butler, Zendaya, and Rebecca Ferguson. It opens on February 29.

The interview by Cheng was released on her YouTube channel on February 19.

In a video lasting just over 27 minutes, she talks with the movie’s director Villeneuve and its lineup of stars, which also includes Florence Pugh, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård and Dave Bautista.

Cheng asks Chalamet and Butler about their performances in the movie, asks for behind-the-scenes snippets, tells them Chinese nicknames, as well as teaching the stars some Cantonese.

“Anything you can share from behind the scenes that you two got from the filming of the movie ?” Cheng asks.

“Just a lot of rehearsals, a lot of trust for one another,” Chalamet answers.

The veteran Hong Kong star then goes on to quiz the stars on their stardom and global profile before asking Chalamet: “Do you know you have a nickname in Hong Kong?”

“Tian Cha”, he replies confirming the name’s English meaning of “sweet tea” before the pair engage about how much Cantonese he knows.

It is unclear how Cheng secured the exclusive interview, but she did have to pass through a strict application procedure.

Before launching her popular YouTube channel in 2023, the veteran entertainer made her name as a TV host and actress for TVB series starting out in the 1980s.

In 1988 and 1991, Cheng won Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Cheng’s snaring of the Dune: Part Two interview has won her widespread praise in China.

“Well done Sister Do,” said one online observer.

While another said: “She is a wonder woman!”
