‘Hiding mistress in a golden house’: Hong Kong wife’s conundrum after mainland spy trip to expose ‘cheating’ husband conceals home buying plan

  • Frequent visits to mainland China by husband of Hong Kong woman prompt her to play detective and tail him on one of his trips
  • Wife’s curiosity leads to an unexpected outcome when she discovers it is a flat her man is after, not a mistress

A Hong Kong wife has told of her true-detective experience in which she discovered the real reason for her husband’s frequent trips to mainland China.

In a posting on the popular local anonymous discussion forum, DiscussHK, late last month the wife explained that she had secretly followed her husband to discover his “secret”.

He often travelled to the mainland for overnight stays and she suspected he had a mistress.

Despite the wife’s strong desire to follow him and confirm her suspicions, she could never find the time because she had to take care of their child.

However, she revealed that a few days before the posting, her mother-in-law agreed to look after the child, freeing her up for a bit of detective work.

However, to the woman’s surprise, when her husband arrived on the mainland, he did not meet a mistress, but a tour guide.

After a little investigation, she found out that her husband was on a “weekend flat-viewing tour” to buy an apartment.

The wife then revealed in the post that her husband had earlier proposed that they buy a property on the mainland, but she refused because she does not want to leave Hong Kong.

This led her to wonder why her husband was pursuing the matter, and left her with a conundrum.

“Is it true that he has a second wife and he needs to buy a flat to accommodate her? I would love to ask him, but if I do, he will know I was stalking him,” the worried wife asked at the end of her post.

Her quandary was viewed tens of thousands of times online and garnered close to 100 comments.

One observer thought the poster was being paranoid: “Maybe he really wants to buy an apartment in mainland China to live in after he retires.”

Another said she should talk to her husband as soon as possible: “It’s such a big deal! You need to speak to him and find out the truth. If he is cheating on you, you should leave him.”

However, some said the wife’s paranoia was reasonable.

“It’s always odd for a married man to spend the night on the mainland regularly, whatever the reason,” said a commenter.

Another said: “He’s trying to hide his mistress in a golden house, isn’t he?”
