Tyson Fury rubber-stamped his credentials as the world’s top heavyweight in his Las Vegas debut on Saturday night as he overwhelmed unbeaten German challenger Tom Schwarz by TKO inside two rounds with a consummate display.

It was a brutal five minutes for Schwarz, a rookie at this level, as Fury displayed his full repertoire for a thrilled Las Vegas crowd and came through the fourth defence of his lineal heavyweight title easily. Now he wants a physical version of the championship.

“Next year were going to hunt down Deontay Wilder and take that green belt,” said Fury after the fight, before he treated the crowd to another rendition of his staple, Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”.

In truth, it was little more than a sortie for the former undisputed world champion as he fulfilled the first of five fights in his US$100 million commitment to US broadcaster ESPN. He can expect far more testing challenges in the remainder of that deal.

Yet, after the show Deontay Wilder put on in laying out Dominic Breazeale in Brooklyn last month, Fury had to answer with a performance of his own, and did.

Almost from the off, Fury was in entertainer mode. After entering the ring to James Brown’s “Living in America”, a nod to fictional fighter Apollo Creed of the Rocky movies, Fury was intent on putting on a show for the capacity MGM Grand crowd.

“I came here to have fun and enjoy myself and put on a show for Las Vegas,” Fury said. “The key tonight was to enjoy myself.

“I used the jab and switched to southpaw. I hit him with a straight left – it was a good shot, it would have put anyone away.

Following a textbook display of nimble footwork, incredible upper-body movement and rapier-like hand speed, Fury downed his man with a straight left strafed through Schwarz’s guard. The writing was on the wall from that point, and with blood gushing from the 25-year-old’s nose, referee Kenny Bayless stepped in to end matters a few moments later.

It was Fury’s first fight since the sensational draw against WBC champion Wilder last year, but he looks set to be back in action again before too long after revealing his promoters had secured his next date for September or October. However, delicate negotiations with Wilder and his team are ongoing and are likely to take longer to conclude than the window that date would allow.
