Michelle Wie ambassador for Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing

After playing a role in the inclusion of her sport in the Olympic programme, American golfer Michelle Wie has been named ambassador for the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Nanjing in August next year.

The International Olympic Committee says that 24-year-old Wie is expected to share her experience with the young golfers competing at the Youth Games.

Golf will feature in the competition scheduled next year ahead of its return to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

A Stanford graduate, Wie attended the IOC session in Copenhagen in 2009 to campaign for the reinclusion of golf.

She said making the American team for the Rio Olympics is “one of my biggest focuses”.

The second edition of the Youth Olympic Games will be held from August 16-28 next year and will feature 28 sports.

Two Olympic champions, swimmer Michael Phelps and pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva, are also Youth Olympic ambassadors.
