Wolves coach says Tsun Dai is making good progress at Premier League club

Hong Kong midfielder Dai Wai-tsun (Tsun Dai) is making good progress at Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers according to his former coach in England.

Rob Edwards, who left his post with Wolves’ development squad to join the FA this week, said Dai and another player of Chinese ethnicity, Hong Wan, were displaying the potential to break into the first team, according to a report on expressandstar.com on Friday.

Dai, 20, scored his first goal in the black and gold of Wolves under-23s late last month when he grabbed a fine goal in the 4-2 EFL Trophy win against Carlisle.

The already much-travelled Hongkonger signed for Wolves, his fourth professional club, in July after spells at Bury, Oxford United and FC Utrecht in the Netherlands and has made good progress in the West Midlands.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers under-23 boss Rob Edwards.

“They’ve been fantastic around the place,” said Edwards, who left the club last week but had been overseeing their development after they both joined in the summer.

“Tsun Dai has had a bit more minutes, but Hong Wan has been working incredibly hard in training and has got a great attitude.

“(Dai) came on (at Morecambe in another EFL Trophy victory) and had a good effect, scoring in the penalty shoot-out.

“We’re really pleased with him as well.”

Dai was brought to the club as part of owner Fosun’s plan to unearth Asian talent. He is one of four Asian players the club has signed since their takeover in July 2016.

Fosun’s ownership of the club has been a big success so far. From a mid-table Championship side, they have become potential European qualifiers in the Premier League in just over three years.

Dai has made five appearances for the Wolves U23 side so far this term.

The youngster has previously been called up to the full Hong Kong representative squad, but was dropped by former boss Gary White.

He controversially turned up at a China under-21 squad training camp in Netherlands last year and sparked speculation that he could be set to declare his international allegiance for China saying, “[the situation] is too sensitive at the moment, and Hong Kong people are already not happy with me.”
