I didn’t know she could hit like that.” Elsewhere, in the women’s draw Aryna Sabalenka set up a quarter-final clash with Zheng Qinwen with a 6-4, 6-4 win over last year’s winner Danielle Collins, while third-seed Coco Gauff’s bid ended with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Poland’s Magda Linette. Emma Raducanu, meanwhile, cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 in 69 minutes over American Amanda Anisimova, who had eliminated Indian Wells winner Mirra Andreeva. In the men’s section, top seed Alexander Zverev recovered from 4-1 down in the first set to beat Australia’s Jordan Thompson 7-5, 6-4. Zverev lost in the opening round at Indian Wells, but with Carlos Alcaraz already out in Miami he will fancy his chances of adding to his list of seven Masters 1000 titles. “Jordan made it difficult for me for sure. He’s a quality player,” Zverev said. “When you’re in rhythm, he knows how to break it a little bit. So he did extremely well today. I’m happy with my level from 1-4 onwards,” he added. Third-seed Taylor Fritz also moved into the fourth round beating Denis Shapovalov of Canada 7-5, 6-3. IPL thriller Ashutosh Sharma hammered a remarkable unbeaten 66 to snatch Delhi Capitals a thrilling one-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. Ashutosh, an impact substitute on debut for Delhi, lifted his new team from a precarious 65-5 to achieve their target of 210 with three balls to spare in Visakhapatnam. Needing 22 off the final two overs and six off the last six balls with one wicket remaining, Ashutosh stood strong and hit the winning six. Delhi were 7-3 in the second over, and had lost half their side for 65 when Faf du Plessis got out on 29 in his first match for the franchise. New captain Axar Patel hit a quick-fire 22 and Tristan Stubbs smashed 34. “Be prepared for it now,” a smiling Axar said after the close win. “It’s going to be like this only under my captaincy. Things will be up and down a little.” Teen star Matthew Brennan sprinted to victory in the first stage of the Tour of Catalonia in pouring rain, pipping Tibor del Grosso as the 104th edition of the race began. British Visma rider Brennan, 19, overhauled the Dutchman in a spectacular finish to the first stage, which ran 178.3 kilometres, starting and ending in Sant Feliu de Guixols. Brennan, who celebrated his first professional victory last week at the GP de Denain with another sprint finish, completed the stage in just over four hours 25 minutes in poor weather. Sprinter Kaden Groves took second place ahead of Alpecin-Deceuninck teammate Del Grosso, who had seemed poised to claim the stage after an attempted breakaway. With last year’s winner Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard not competing in Catalonia, 2023 champion Primoz Roglic and Tirreno-Adriatico winner Juan Ayuso are the favourites to claim the general classification victory. Stage two on Tuesday takes riders 177.3 kilometres from Banyoles to Figueres.
