Wheelchair fencer Yu Chui-yee won seven bouts in a row but had to settle for a silver medal in the Rio Paralympics on Wednesday after losing in the final to Rong Jing of China in Carioca Arena 3.

Unbeaten in the pool stage followed by two successive victories in the knockout stage, Yu looked strong enough to overcome the last hurdle in the women’s individual foil (category A) but the mainlander proved to be in a class of her own with a 15-8 triumph to take the gold.

The result also ended Yu’s impressive 12-year unbeaten run in the event since she took gold in the individual foil at her maiden Paralympics in Athens back in 2004.

The 32-year-old was also the champion at the Beijing and London Paralympics.
Yu receives her silver in the medal ceremony. The gold was won by China’s Rong Jing, and the bronze by Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Krajnyak.

“My individual events are over in Rio and I feel a bit sorry for failing to win a gold medal for Hong Kong,” said Yu, who was also surprisingly beaten in the individual epee pool stage. “But my hard work and effort still paid off as I took a silver. Thank you for all your support to the Hong Kong team.

“The team event is to come and every member of the Hong Kong team will do their best in every bout, for the team and for each of us.”

Yu will be joined by fellow members Chan Yui-chong and Justine Charissa Ng in the team epee open category, the same event they won a bronze in in London four years ago. The same trio will also take part in the team foil on the final day of the wheelchair fencing competition along with the men’s foil team featuring Tam Chik-sum, Chan Wing-kin and Cheong Meng-chai.

Chan Yui-chong, meanwhile, was beaten in the bronze medal match of the individual foil (category B) and failed to secure a second medal after finishing third in the individual epee. Chan, who came top of the group in the pool stage, fell short in the medal bout after losing to Yao Fang of China 15-11.

In boccia, Leung Yuk-wing reached the quarter-finals in the mixed individual (BC4) after finishing second in his group. He will face Stephen McGuire of Great Britain for a place in the last four.

Ho Yuen-kei and Leung Mei-yee also made it the knockout stage of the same event in the BC1 and BC3 categories respectively.

Ho will take on Greek bowler Grigorios Polychronidis for a semi-final berth while Leung’s opponent will be Yoo Won-jeong of South Korea.
