Kenneth To King-him continued his medal challenge for Hong Kong at the World University Games as he advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s 50-metre freestyle in Taiwan this morning.

Racing in his fourth event at the National Taiwan Sport University arena, To came sixth in his sprinting event heat in a time of 22.61 seconds. Despite the relatively low position, the 25 year-old was still able to earn his place in the last 16 this evening with an overall ranking of 15th.

To said after the 100-metre semi-finals on Wednesday that it was a great experience for him to represent Hong Kong in the major games and was fortunate to have a rest day ahead of the 50 metres.

Having only become eligible to represent Hong Kong in June after returning to the place where he was born, the formerly Australia-based swimmer has already set two new Hong Kong records. He swam 2:01.37 in the 200-metre individual medley semi-finals which sent him to the final where he finished eighth. In the men’s 100-metre freestyle, he set a new record 49.41 when leading out the Hong Kong 4x100 metre relay team on Sunday and then shattered his own in the individual event with a better time of 49.39 in the heats.

Joining To in the evening’s agenda will be Siobhan Haughey, who is going to mount a serious challenge to the women’s 200-metre freestyle gold medal after setting the fastest time in the previous round. The 19-year-old has already won gold in the 100-metre freestyle.
