Clarke urges Europe to follow US example
Europe may need to recall a former captain to compete with the United States in the 2014 Ryder Cup after the Americans "put down a statement" by calling on Tom Watson, 2011 British Open winner Darren Clarke says. A winner of eight majors, Watson's presence as captain for the match at Gleneagles shows how determined the US are to reclaim the trophy and Clarke said Europe should respond with a big-name appointment, while distancing himself from the role. Europe never ask a former captain to return but Clarke says that stance should change, offering the possibility of a return to the role for Colin Montgomerie, who steered Europe to victory at Celtic Manor in 2010. "We seriously need the right man for the job," Clarke told the BBC. Europe are expected to name their captain early next year. Watson captained the US in 1993, the last time they won overseas. Bayonne star Carrillo hit by heart problem
Bayonne back-row forward Francois Carrillo's condition was improving yesterday after he was hospitalised following what appeared to be a heart problem in the warm-up before Saturday's Top 14 rugby match with Mont-de-Marsan. Carrillo, 24, collapsed a few minutes before the end of the warm-up session. A heart specialist team gave Carrillo cardiac massage before he was taken to hospital. "The first examinations are reassuring, according to the doctors at the hospital," the club said. "Carrillo is conscious and stable. The nature of the problem has not yet been clearly determined." Redknapp takes aim at 'overpaid' QPR players
Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has hit out at the pay received by some players at the club after watching his side lose 1-0 at Newcastle United, leaving them second from bottom in English soccer's Premier League. "There are a lot of players at this club who earn far too much money for what they are; far, far, far too much money for their ability and what they give to the club," he told the BBC. Redknapp, who joined the struggling west London club a month ago to replace the sacked Mark Hughes, said he was wary of big spending in the January transfer window and indicated that some players could be on their way out.
