Recap by phillip woo

Favourite Cordyceps got up in the final few metres after a dream run in the box-seat for the win. He lived up to a long-priced second on debut last month and there's more wins to come. Well-backed late King Opie assumed the lead stalking the leader Chachaup and wouldn't go away without a fight. He's put the writing on the wall second-up early last month and will be winning races next season. Royal Mojito stayed on well for a placing after a no-cover run in midfield from a wide gate. He's a winner waiting to happen if he remains in the grade and the 1,400m suits him better. In a return to form, City Legend got going late near the inside after travelling second from the rear. Lightning Treasure came up flat over the last 150m travelling one-out, one-back but was inconvenienced early on by a riderless horse. Bellagio did have to check behind runners late when making progress from beyond midfield. He's flashed ability with excuses in defeat.

Racing Incident Report

Race Five: (782) - SHAM CHUNG HANDICAP - Class 4 - 1200Meters

KHAKI stumbled badly at the start, resulting in its rider, C Schofield, being dislodged.

After the race, C Schofield was examined by the Racing Medical Officer and passed fit to fulfil his remaining race riding engagements.

CHARITY GRAND shifted out at the start and made heavy contact with KING OPIE which in turn shifted out and bumped SEIZE THE SPIRIT.

SPEEDY DRAGON began only fairly.

From wide barriers, CITY LEGEND and BELLAGIO were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

After being bumped by the riderless KHAKI approaching the 900 Metres, LIGHTNING TREASURE commenced to over-race and making the turn at the 900 Metres got its head up when checked away from the heels of KING OPIE (O Doleuze) which shifted in when not properly clear.

O Doleuze was advised to ensure that he provides sufficient clearance when shifting ground in similar circumstances.

In this incident, CORDYCEPS, which was racing to the inside of LIGHTNING TREASURE, made the turn awkwardly when racing close to the heels of CHACHAUP, exacerbating the tightening to LIGHTNING TREASURE.

After this, LIGHTNING TREASURE continued to prove very difficult to settle and got its head up when having to be checked away from the heels of KING OPIE.

Approaching and passing the 800 Metres, BELLAGIO got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHARITY GRAND.

In this incident, CITY LEGEND raced tight inside BELLAGIO.

Near the 550 Metres, ROYAL MOJITO was brushed and taken wider by LIGHTNING TREASURE which shifted out from behind KING OPIE.

Passing the 50 Metres, BELLAGIO, which was endeavouring to improve between LIGHTNING TREASURE and CITY LEGEND, was crowded for room due to CITY LEGEND initially shifting out and LIGHTNING TREASURE shifting in.

As the Stewards were satisfied that BELLAGIO had not properly established running between LIGHTNING TREASURE and CITY LEGEND prior to those two horses shifting ground, no further action was taken.

For the majority of the race, ROYAL MOJITO travelled wide and without cover.

When questioned regarding his riding of SPEEDY DRAGON in the Straight, S Clipperton stated that rounding the Home Turn he attempted to shift out, however, he received a call from Z Purton, the rider of BELLAGIO, which was racing to his outside.

He said therefore he was obliged to remain racing behind CORDYCEPS rather than shifting to the outside of that horse.

He said in the early part of the Straight CORDYCEPS shifted out which created room for SPEEDY DRAGON to improve to the inside of that horse, however, SPEEDY DRAGON got its head on the side and lay in and did not feel comfortable in its action.

He added SPEEDY DRAGON continued to be unbalanced for some distance approaching and passing the 200 Metres, however, near the 150 Metres appeared to balance up better and for this reason he was then able to place the horse under pressure over the latter stages of the race.

He said in the circumstances SPEEDY DRAGON's run was better than it appeared.

After the race, T Berry stated that LIGHTNING TREASURE made an abnormal breathing noise.

A veterinary inspection of LIGHTNING TREASURE including an endoscopic examination immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

A veterinary inspection of BELLAGIO immediately following the race did not show any significant findings, however, the horse was unable to be scoped due to being fractious.

CORDYCEPS and KING OPIE were sent for sampling.
