Recap by phillip woo

Well-punted late Flying Monkey ran down Mr Right for the win following a one-out oneback run. The step back to the 1,000m was the key to victory. Mr Right was softened just enough in front by Winfull Patrol to just knock up late. It's only a matter of time before he salutes next season over this trip at this level. Triumphant Jewel takes time to find his feet but finished strongly along the inside to just edge favourite Lamarosa for third. He's racing well without winning at this level. Lamarosa was collared late for a placing with a steady move following a rail run behind midfield. He's limited. Dr Race was running on late from near the back. He's been an honest sprinter at the Valley last season. Nashashuk made some ground without threatening after pulling off the fence following a run behind midfield. He'll be winning in Class Five next season.

Racing Incident Report

Race Three: (791) - KINGS FALCON HANDICAP - Class 4 - 1000Meters

On arrival at the Start, the tongue tie applied to NASHASHUK was replaced.

CHEERS AND CHEERS began only fairly and then was crowded for room shortly after the start between WINFULL PATROL and NASHASHUK which shifted out after being brushed by LAMAROSA.

PEACE N PROSPERITY shifted out at the start and bumped FLYING NOBLE.

Near the 750 Metres, LAMAROSA was steadied when crowded for room inside CHEERS AND CHEERS, which after improving quickly to be racing to the inside of FLYING MONKEY (K C Leung) as that horse was being shifted across, was taken in by FLYING MONKEY and then shifted in further away from that horse.

Whilst the Stewards acknowledged that CHEERS AND CHEERS had improved its position after FLYING MONKEY was initially well clear of that horse, nonetheless K C Leung was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is aware of the changing circumstances of a race when shifting ground.

Approaching the 700 Metres, NASHASHUK raced in restricted room between LAMAROSA and NAMJONG NAMJONG.

After the 600 Metres, NAMJONG NAMJONG was left racing wide and without cover.

When questioned regarding his riding of FORTUNE ANTHEM which was having its first race start tonight, S Clipperton stated that it was anticipated that tonight's race would be run at a very fast tempo.

He said he was instructed, from the outside barrier, to steady FORTUNE ANTHEM in the early stages and obtain a position with cover.

He said he had hoped to be able to obtain about a midfield position with cover given that the race was likely to be run at a fast tempo.

He said although FORTUNE ANTHEM jumped awkwardly, nonetheless it began satisfactorily and in the early stages remained racing wide in order to assess whether there would be a position in about midfield to obtain cover.

He said TRIUMPHANT JEWEL, which was racing to his inside, was being vigorously ridden along at this stage and due to the makeup of the field in the early stages, he believed that he would be left racing wide and possibly without cover were he to attempt to obtain a midfield position and therefore he elected to steady FORTUNE ANTHEM approaching the 800 Metres and obtain a trailing position behind DR RACE towards the rear of the field.

He added after trailing that horse throughout the middle stages, he commenced to ride his mount along rounding the Home Turn and shifted to the outside of DR RACE on straightening.

He said he did consider attempting to shift FORTUNE ANTHEM to the outside of NASHASHUK, however, at that time NAMJONG NAMJONG was positioned to his outside and he was aware of FLYING NOBLE racing to the outside of that horse and therefore he did not believe that he would be able to shift FORTUNE ANTHEM to the outside of NASHASHUK without causing interference to either of those horses.

He said near the 250 Metres he shifted FORTUNE ANTHEM out to be trailing PEACE N PROSPERITY albeit some distance behind that horse and at this time he felt that the best option for him to pursue was a run to the inside of PEACE N PROSPERITY which was available between that horse and DR RACE which would have allowed him to follow the eventual winner FLYING MONKEY through the field.

He said although he was aware that there was a run available to the outside of PEACE N PROSPERITY, he felt that by the time FORTUNE ANTHEM improved into a position to take that run, there was a possibility that that run would close due to either horse shifting ground and he therefore felt that the more likely option of obtaining clear running would be to pursue a run to the inside of PEACE N PROSPERITY.

He said after committing FORTUNE ANTHEM to this run, DR RACE was taken out by CHEERS AND CHEERS approaching the 100 Metres which resulted in FORTUNE ANTHEM being awkwardly placed behind DR RACE.

He said he continued to ride his mount out until after the 50 Metres, however, as clear running was not available for FORTUNE ANTHEM over the concluding stages, he was not able to properly test that horse out close to the finishing line.

Mr D J Hall, the trainer of FORTUNE ANTHEM, confirmed that he believed tonight's race would be run at a very quick tempo and therefore although FORTUNE ANTHEM had shown some speed in its barrier trials in Hong Kong, he believed that were the horse to be ridden to obtain a forward position, there would be a high likelihood that FORTUNE ANTHEM would be left very wide and without cover.

He said therefore, given that the horse was having its first start in Hong Kong, he believed that it would be detrimental to the horse's chances to finish off the race were it not able to obtain cover and accordingly instructed Jockey Clipperton to obtain a three wide position with cover if possible, however, he was unaware of whether that would position FORTUNE ANTHEM in the field.

He said although FORTUNE ANTHEM had drawn the outside barrier tonight, he anticipated that the horse would race well given that it had trialed pleasingly in the lead up to the race and accordingly he advised the connections that FORTUNE ANTHEM would perform well tonight.

S Clipperton was advised that his riding of FORTUNE ANTHEM, particularly in the Home Straight, had come under notice and that his decision not to pursue the run between PEACE N PROSPERITY and NASHASHUK had caused the Stewards to give consideration as to whether he should be charged with a breach of a significant Rule of Racing.

S Clipperton was severely reprimanded and advised that he must ensure that he rides his mounts in such a manner that his intention to win or to obtain the best possible placing is not open to query.

A veterinary inspection of FORTUNE ANTHEM immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on LAMAROSA at the request of Trainer P O'Sullivan.

The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea.

Before being allowed to race again, LAMAROSA TEAM will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

LAMAROSA, FLYING MONKEY and MR RIGHT were sent for sampling.
