Powerhouse KGV girls ‘school’ sevens rivals to seal Bill Williams three-peat
HKIS beat YMCA 26-12 to win boys crown
King George V girls romped home 41-0 in the final against Sha Tin College/Discovery College to win their third consecutive Standard Chartered Bill Williams Schools Sevens title at King’s Park on Friday.
KGV and Shatin were the class teams of the tournament, finishing first and second in the single round-robin phase of the girls competition to advance to the final.
KGV amassed 121 points in their round-robin matches, conceding just 15 points.
KGV were unstoppable in the title decider, demolishing their opponents 41-0 to keep their perfect title-winning record intact after winning the first two editions of the Bill Williams tournament after the girls competition was introduced during the 2013-14 season.
In the battle of the boys, Hong Kong International School powered through their pool B matches – recording a 90-for, 22-against points tally in four wins to finish first ahead of Island School and KGV.
YMCA Hong Kong Christian College produced the upset of the tournament in pool A, beating defending Bill Williams champions and HKRU Schools Sevens league winners South Island School 20-12 to top the group and advance to the cup final against HKIS.
YMCA nabbed 99 points on the day, one behind the century reached by top scorers SIS who took second place in the pool to advance to the Plate final.
In the boys Cup final, HKIS withstood YMCA to win the decider 26-12, while Island School handed South Island School their second loss of the day – a 19-14 reversal in the Plate competition, with Harrow School winning the Bowl 40-12 over KGV.
The Bill Williams Schools Sevens tournament, which is named after a key figure in the development of youth rugby in Hong Kong, is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Rugby Union and the Hong Kong Schools Rugby Union.
