As scalpers target Taylor Swift’s Asia concerts, live-streaming could curb ‘greedflation’

  • Ticket scalping, though distasteful, cannot be entirely eliminated but there is a place for legislation to bring greater order to the resale process

As you read this on Friday morning, hundreds of Taylor Swift fans will be queued outside post office branches in Singapore, hoping to secure tickets for the American pop sensation’s concerts in the city state next March. By noon, hundreds of thousands will be online, vying for their tickets during general sales.

Don’t scoff: attending these concerts seems to be of such great importance that numerous individuals have reported observing their colleagues and friends in a state of high anxiety, feverishly studying every available guide on navigating the digital sales portal.

When the dust settles on Friday afternoon and all tickets are sold, we can anticipate a renewed round of concern regarding ticket scalpers. From Malaysia to Australia, these conversations have already begun in light of major Western acts resuming tours in the region.

In Malaysia, rampant scalping of tickets for British band Coldplay’s November 22 concert prompted authorities to consider amending laws to address unauthorised secondary market sales. In Australia, after tickets were sold on platforms like Viagogo with mark-ups of up to 250 per cent, consumer advocacy group Choice called for “nationally consistent legislation” to tackle the issue.

Laws surrounding scalping vary across states. In New South Wales, anti-scalping laws stipulate that tickets can only be resold for a maximum of 110 per cent of the original ticket price, while in Victoria, a similar rule applies solely to events designated by the state government as a “major event”. Swift’s February concerts in Australia – two at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and three at Sydney’s Accor Stadium – do not possess such designation.

Experts in marketing and consumer behaviour have also weighed in on the matter. To my knowledge, there is no clear consensus on the merit or effectiveness of anti-scalping laws. Joe Escobedo, an adjunct marketing lecturer at the National University of Singapore, noted in a CNA commentary that enforcing such laws requires significant resources and may inadvertently “drive the market underground”, rendering the legislation futile.

My personal view is that ticket scalping – the original form of “greedflation” before the term gained popularity – though distasteful, cannot be entirely eliminated. After all, most secondary market sales occur between willing buyers and sellers.

Nevertheless, I believe there is a place for legislation, particularly in bringing greater order to the resale process. Surely, measures can be implemented to prevent single entities from purchasing tickets in bulk solely for resale?

A colleague, who describes herself as “half a Swiftie” and is on the hunt for tickets, recently sent me a link to an advertisement on classifieds platform Carousell for an entire subsection of Coldplay’s January 30 concert in Singapore. The price for the 520 seats in the section was listed at S$300,000 (US$222,000), with the seller describing it as akin to “having your own VIP club”, free from “squeezing or queuing with strangers or getting jostled like sardines”.

This could be a spoof, but if someone managed to purchase tickets on such a scale – through bots or other means – there ought to be a way to curb such practices. Uefa, the European football governing body, employs a system whereby tickets for its prestigious season finales are delivered to dedicated mobile apps. Transfers are technically allowed but are highly restrictive for mass scalpers.

Escobedo, in his commentary, suggested these industrial-level scalpers could also be thwarted through organisers offering live-streamed concert options. While not for diehard fans, it could be a compromise solution for those who do not want to pay exorbitant amounts but hope to be part of the concert experience.

With virtual reality making major advances in recent times, it is not a bad idea.
