Tsunami warnings for waves up up to one metre high remain in place for much of the Pacific coast after a powerful earthquake off the coast of Japan this morning.

Japan has lifted a tsunami warning for its northeastern coast nearly four hours after a powerful offshore earthquake. 

The earlier warnnig was for waves of up to 3m. The Japan Meteorological Agency had urged residents to flee to higher ground.

The largest wave recorded was 1.6m at Sendai Bay, about two hours after the quake.
