Alfonso Wong Kar-hei died on the first of January.

1923

Alfonso Wong Kar-hei, better know by his nom de plume, or pen name, Wong Chak, is born in Tianjin.

1944

He graduates after studing Western Art at Fu Jen Catholic University in Beijing.

1956

He moves to Hong Kong from the mainland.

1962 

He begins drawing Old Master Q (OMQ) under the name Wong Chak, the name of his eldest son.

1964

OMQ is serialised.

1965

The first OMQ live action movie, Old Master Q is released. Other films based on OMQ were subsequently released, with two more in 1966, and one in 1975 and one in 1976.

1974

He emigrates to the United States. He retires in the '80s due to health issues.

1981

The first cartoon version of OMQ, Colour Old Master Q is released.

1995

Alfonso’s son, Joseph Wong Chak succeeds his father’s bussiness and starts drawing OMQ.

2001

Old Master Q 2001, the first movie combining CG and live action, is released.

Critics accused Wong of plagiarising the works of Chinese artist Peng Ti. Author Feng Jicai published a book explaining the details of the controversy.

2012

A statue of OMQ is erected on the Avenue of Comic Stars in 2012. Wong leaves his handprint there.

2017

Wong dies on January 1.
