Orbis Moonwalkers

Whether you are a marathon runner, you have a thing for climbing stairs or you prefer working out at night, read on. We are sure there's a charity sports challenge for you.

Moonwalk Orbis

What: A 20km overnight hike from Kwai Chung to Tuen Mun. Don't forget to show up in neon-coloured outfits and glow-in-the-dark costumes. The top fundraiser will win a three-night stay at a four-star hotel.

Why: Orbis collects funds to eradicate blindness. Participants, or "moonwalkers", walk part of the journey blindfolded to feel what it is like to live in a world of darkness.

When: November 1 (Sunday)

Where: Starts in Kwai Chung, and ends in Tuen Mun

How: Individuals have to raise at least HK$780 for the event. Applications close on September 25

Hong Chi Climbathon

What: It's 75 floors (or 1,688 steps) of intense exercise. All you have to do is climb to the top of one of the city's tallest buildings - Central Plaza in Wan Chai. If you are afraid you'll be already out of breath midway, there's an option to climb just 29 floors. There're prizes for the first three to reach the top and for the person who raises most money.

Why: The Hong Chi Association raises money to help people with intellectual disabilities receive more vocational training and higher education.

When: October 11 (Saturday)

Where: Central Plaza in Wan Chai

How: The 75-storey race requires a minimum donation of HK$1,000 per person while it's HK$600 for the 29-floor version Applications close on September 10

Unicef Charity Run

What: The city's second-largest distance running event, it offers you many levels of difficulty: 3km, 5km, 10km or 21km half-marathon. You'll spend a nice weekend running along scenic spots like Inspiration Lake, a coastal trail by the Airport Express line, and Sunny Bay.

Why: Proceeds will go to help the charity's work in more than 150 countries to prevent HIV from being transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding, and treating infected children as soon as possible.

When: November 23 (Sunday)

Where: North Lantau Island

How: Participants must raise from HK$350 to HK$1,800 depending on the race category. Applications close on October 17

24 Hour Race

What: It's not an easy thing to run for 24 hours, so this event puts the emphasis on teamwork. Find a captain (or be one) and take turns running with your teammates for an entire day.

Why: Outraged by modern-day slavery such as child labour and human trafficking, a group of Hong Kong students started Running To Stop The Traffik in 2010. This year, their 24 Hour Race will recruit student runners in three cities - Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur - to raise funds to rescue and rehabilitate children sold into prostitution in Nepal, India and Malaysia.

When: November 15 and 16

Where: Lugard Road on The Peak

How: Sign up as a team leader on behalf of your school by September 15. Then put together a team of seven to nine runners

Whatever charity run you choose, be sure to arrive at the starting line well-prepared. Prior to the event, exercise regularly. On the big day, don't forget to carry a large bottle of water and a towel. And stretch, stretch and stretch before you start running!
