Two gold medals! TWO!Haughey did not disappoint her fans as she finished first with a time of 1:57.71 ahead of Katherine Grace Drabot of the US, who came in second, and Arina Openysheva of Russia, who came in third. With this win, Haughey is one step closer to her dream of representing Hong Kong at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
In the countdown to the women’s 200 metres freestyle final today, Haughey decided on an early recovery session less than 12 hours after her victory to claim the first gold medal for Hong Kong in Taipei.
The University of Michigan psychology student’s skipped the 4x200 metres freestyle relay on Wednesday in an attempt to conserve energy for tonight's individual 200m event instead.
She also became the first swimmer from Hong Kong to reach a world championships final after finishing fifth in the 200 metres freestyle Budapest last month.
In an exclusive with Young Post on Wednesday after her first gold medal, she spoke about her long term aspirations. "My long term goal would be going to 2020 Tokyo Olympics but I certainly have small goals along the way. I've been having a great summer so far so I'm optimistic about meeting my goals in the future!"
