This round we asked: What’s the strangest food combination that you enjoy eating?

Strange or not, I absolutely love shrimp chilli paste and white bread. The kick you get from the fiery spice is the ultimate wake-me-up breakfast, especially if you stayed up studying the night before. Don’t worry though, I wouldn’t eat it on a daily basis.

The strangest food combination that I enjoyed eating most must be curry ice cream in Taiwan. It was a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a curry sauce on top. The warm curry sauce was spicy and a bit sour, while the ice cream was sweet and cold. The contrast in the mixture, temperature and taste surprisingly made it a perfect match. It was like having music played on my taste buds.

Thomas Lee Ka-chun, 16, Sing Yin Secondary School

My strangest yet most enjoyable food combination is fried spare ribs with strawberries. The spare ribs are actually fried together with the strawberries. Thus you will find the sweet flavour of strawberries in the spare ribs. Despite the sweet taste, the spare ribs are salty because of the sauce used. Enjoying food in a different way was a real eye-opener for me.

Rajinder Pal, 15, Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo)

Everyone may have tried eating a chocolate-dipped strawberry, but a banana may be a better option. The strangest food combination that I enjoy eating is a peeled banana dipped in soft chocolate. It is always good at midnight, maybe when a match is on. Trust me, it’s worth it. It may be weird, but after one taste you will be dying for more.

Nicholas Chu Weng-lam, 16, Sing Yin Secondary School

Bored with the combination of French fries and ketchup? No problem. Let’s try something new. Buy yourself some vanilla ice cream, dip the French fries in it and be impressed. The smooth ice cream chills the crispy golden French fries and everything melts in your mouth. It sounds a little weird but that’s why it’s unusual and tasty.

Joseph Ho, 16, Wah Yan College

The strangest food combination I have ever eaten is marinated bean curd (stinky tofu) mixed with ketchup. The first time I tried it was actually a big mistake as I used some ketchup instead of a thick chilli sauce. But I found that the mixture was quite nice and tasted really good.

A classic ... French fries with ice cream (my favourite is McDonald’s Oreo McFlurry). Combining the crunchiness/sogginess of the salty French fries with the cool and sweet Oreo ice cream gives a great taste – it’s a wonderfully soothing combination, especially during the summer heat.

Natalie Fung Chi-ying, 14, St Paul’s Co-educational College

It’s a “spicy” dessert – garlic with apple pie. Taking a bite, the apple melts in my mouth with the accompanying garlic. Although they seem so different, the two are actually a match made in heaven. Experts say that garlic can help fight cancer and apples are a healthy, high-fibre fruit. This apple pie is thus a marvel for those who say “Health is wealth”. Garlic with apple pie? Cool, huh.
