For our government, token public consultation has always been a useful trick to introduce unpopular policies. The Lung Mei Beach plan is no exception. Thousands of people are against the project, but the government insisted that this was what most Tai Po residents wanted.

Yet green groups have been saying that the development will have a severe impact on rare species that live in the area. The fact that, despite such worries, the project received the green light from many government bodies is simply outrageous.

Officials should not disregard or downplay the views of citizens under the ruse of "public consultation". We need more public participation in decision-making.
